Last year, several of the writers at this site embarked on a bold undertaking; one which hopefully put the AFI’s latest Top 100 lists to shame. This year they are doing the best movie quotes. Next year, I hear its opening credits. Meanwhile over here in 2004, we released The Director’s Power List; similar to those self-congratulatory “you made the most money” lists in Forbes and Entertainment Weekly, only ours did its best to focus on quality. Who was on a roll? Who wasn’t? Who has had the most impressive career and still churning it out? In 2005, as we update that list we figured, “how can we as a site named Hollywood Bitchslap not give the proverbial smackdown to those hacks who continue to make our lives miserable?” The answer was immediate and simple. These bastards had to get their own list; one which we hope the public (and more importantly) the studios will pay attention to and keep from hiring. You, like us, will find a few flukes within these resumes (even a couple great ones), but no doubt you will recognize that once a crappy director, nearly always a crappy director and they must be stopped. And while we have a few snickers at the expense of the AFI, let’s extend a few digits to the overhyped, outdated, unimaginative, annual Razzie Awards. 100 directors and a total of only 23 nominations between them registering just a single win. You tell us who sucks more than these hundred?
Scores were tallied up based on the following criteria:
- Average ratings of each of the director’s films from our critics
- The scale of those ratings earn or lose extra points based on their quality.
- The bad-to-good ratio loses them even more points.
- These directors actually earn points the longer its been since they directed.
I would like to thank Scott Weinberg, Collin Souter, Peter Sobczynski, Eric D. Snider, Nick Digilio, David Cornelius and Ryan Arthur for throwing their extensive time into this project, one which will continue to grow year-by-year.
