Virtual Sex With Shay Jordan: a milemarker for a porn performer's rise to the top
Though the powers that be at Efilmcritic donít pony up the big bucks to allow my attendance, since I ostensibly cover the adult film industry, it would be wrong to not mention the recently concluded Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, during which the annual Adult Video News awards were given out. I hope to have some upcoming coverage of noteworthy and award-winning titles from the event.
Before the show began, I contacted the exceptionally cool publicity department at adult company Digital Playground about possibly doing something regarding their nominations. Happily, the company arranged a short interview with one of their rising contract girls, Shay Jordan, who was nominated for ďBest New StarletĒ at this yearís ceremony (though she lost to the also-delightful Bree Olson).
Shay, despite making adult films for less than two years, is already regarded as a bright, rising star. Her all-natural body (more and more a rarity in adult films) and exotic appearance suggest a younger Tera Patrick, and her enthusiasm for performing is infectious and fun. This writer sees a strong, nigh-limitless future for her in the adult industry. In the midst of the Expo, she was kind enough to answer a few questions about her career thus far and a few of her recent movies.
Q: Shay, you've had a successful year as a Digital Playground contract girl, and probably the biggest news is that you've been nominated as AVN Best Newcomer. How would you rank your chances of winning? Are you just happy to be nominated or are you secretly engaging in espionage to ensure a win?
A: Being nominated for Best New Starlet is a huge honor. I was looking at the nominees and all the girls on the list definitely deserve it. I really hope I win, but if I donít I'll toast to the girl who does.
Q: You've been featured more prominently in several DP productions over time, but this year saw the release of your VIRTUAL SEX title. What's your reaction to this significant step in your career?
A: Making the virtual was crazy. I mean I had a great time but it was very difficult. Even though, it turned out really awesome. The sex was still great and the outcome of the video was amazing.
Q: Your newest POV title, THROB POV 3 was recently released. Although it's similar to a "virtual sex" title it's a different experience for the viewer. How does the process of the POV stuff differ from the Virtual Sex work for you as a performer?
A: Yes, they are kind of similar but POV shoots are way more fun for the mere fact that you can actually have more sex and not worry about the camera as much.
Q: You've been prominently featured in DP's SCREAM series, which are playful vignettes utilizing horror movie and thriller conventions, and I have to say the SCREAMs are some of my favorite titles that I've seen in the past few months. How, if at all, is the energy different on a SCREAM shoot as opposed to other shoots?
A: SCREAMs are so much fun to shoot. Simply because the fact that itís a horror porn film makes it exciting. The story lines and scenarios are fun and creepy. Plus we get to shoot in cool scary houses.
Q: What about Digital Playground made you want to sign an exclusive rather than freelance for awhile?
A: Before I got into the industry I didn't really know companies and who was big or not. When I got into the industry I told myself that I wanted to last so I definitely wanted a contract. Luckily enough I was found by Digital Playground and I've been happy ever since.
Q: You've played in a mix of gonzo-type releases and features that require you to play characters. Do you enjoy the acting aspect of your work? Do you want roles that push your limits as an actress?
A: Yes I really, really enjoy the acting part of my job. I went to singing, dancing and acting school when I was younger so I was always into acting. So getting to act and have sex is like a dream.
Q: You have several titles available to choose from right now. In which title are you happiest with your performance? Which was the most fun to shoot? Which was the most difficult?
A: My favorite film that I shot would have to be BABYSITTERS. I had great chemistry with all the people I worked with and my roles were so much fun. I donít have a most difficult one yet because I always enjoy making porn.
Q: Who's your favorite guy to work with? Who's your favorite girl?
A: My favorite guy to work with is Johnny Sins, because he's a great performer and he's not bad looking, either. My favorite girl to work with is Jesse Jane; I donít think I even need to explain why.
Q: Even though we're somewhat sexually open as a society, there's still a huge conservative streak to the US at this point in time. Why did you choose this career over something a little more conventional?
A: I chose this career because I love sex, I love the camera and I love money. I think everyone at some point in their life watches porn, so they should just relax because someone has to do the job.
Q: We're seeing more and more adult talent not only act, but branch into writing and directing. Does that side of the business have any appeal to you?
A: Definitely! I can't wait to cross over to directing. Itís something in really looking forward to.
Q: Do you have any cool stories about meeting fans? Any disturbing stories about meeting fans?
A: Well, this year at the AEE a couple came in and had me sign each and every one of my movie covers and magazines. It was an amazing feeling. Nothing weird so far, thank god.
Again, a special thank you to Shay Jordan and to Digital Playground for their time and energy in the middle of the AVN whirlwind. All of the titles mentioned in this interview are readily available from your favorite local adult retailer (and are highly recommended). Shayís next starring feature, SHAY JORDAN: VIDEO NASTY is due, appropriately enough, on Valentineís Day 2008.
