P-P-P-Porn?!: Awards Seasoning Part One

Not The Bradys XXX, one of the better adult features of 2007
by L. Pete Morton

Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the fortune of being able to view various adult films from 2007 that are noteworthy for one reason or other. They were all nominated for at least one award by several different awards-giving agencies (which are legion in adult film). If I had more time, each of these films would deserve an individual write-up. So that I can be sure this stuff gets reviewed before 2009, I’m going the “capsule review” route.

Janine Loves Jenna: Jenna Jameson continues to release movies although she famously declared at the 2008 AVN Awards that she’ll “never spread (her) legs for the porn industry again.” Janine Loves Jenna, her teaming with formerly retired and formerly “girls only” actress Janine, is one of her more noteworthy films from the last couple of years. It’s a feature that attempts to evoke an epic scope, a journey through hell to find and rescue lost love. And, yes, it features the stars having sex with male partners as well as each other. The plot (as with most porn, it’s threadbare) involves Janine’s accidental death and Jenna committing suicide to find her in the afterlife. She does so quickly upon arrival in hell, and the lovers have to navigate the infernal realm, both boffing and witnessing same throughout their journey. They finally meet the “King of Hades,” (director Justin Sterling in full make-up and clearly casting himself for the perks) and must sate him in order to return home. Sterling tries to be creative with his editing, and that will either make you appreciate the film more or infuriate you endlessly…I myself rarely mind anything that attempts to make adult film more cinematic. Sterling’s not going to have Thelma Schoonmaker’s career, but neither has he watched too many Michael Bay movies. All told, this is a good production, but with all the money the two stars pull in whenever they do a film, sets and special effects should be top-notch. I really want to see adult film attempt to tell interesting stories, and while Janine Loves Jenna has a lot going for it, I can’t help but feel it could have had a little more. But if you like Jenna and/or you like Janine (and I certainly like both), you’ll be happy with this entry in their video canon.

Not the Bradys XXX: This goes in the “just plain fun” category. While I love adult films that aspire to evoke art, there’s also something to be said for having a goal and absolutely realizing it. Writer/director/producer Will Ryder of the adult studio X-Play clearly knows the source material, and it doesn’t take much to push the much-loved sitcom into adult territory when the not-Bradys need a little extra cash and the porn studio down the street is more than willing to put them to work. All the sex is good, of course, but little details such as wardrobe and set dressing really make this work and turn it from a novelty to a production that will probably be a strong seller for years to come. Why more adult films don’t take a little extra time to pay attention to a few details, and therefore create product with longer shelf-life, is beyond me. Perhaps the best detail here is in casting Aurora Snow, one of adult’s smartest performers and best actresses, in the role of Jan. Although the fantastic Hillary Scott’s Marcia is the ostensible selling point of the movie, Snow is still the best thing about it. Ryder is already working on a sequel as well as Not Bewitched XXX, so he’s clearly at the vanguard of a new, lucrative trend.

Babysitters: Digital Playground may be the most consistent studio producing porn today, and they’re certainly in the top two or three. They don’t release compilations (cheap and quick repackaging of scenes from other movies) so you know you’re getting new stuff with every DVD or download, they have a great stable of beautiful girls who seem to enjoy the sex they’re having on camera, and most of their well-shot productions have a sense of humor about them. These strengths play heavily into one of their better titles, Babysitters. Several of the DP contract girls are on-hand, including Jesse Jane, Teagan Presley, Shay Jordan, and Sophia Santi, but a whole lot of other ladies get to play, too. None of the DP girls disappoint, but this film will remain notable for an amazing, award-winning oral sex display from blazing newcomer Sasha Grey. In a blowbang with several guys, Sasha turns blowjobs into both a show of human endurance as well as near performance art. It’s an amazing display, especially since it overshadows some damn fine sex all over the rest of the disc.

Eden: Adam & Eve takes the basic idea of Digital Playground’s Island Fever series and crosses it with Fantasy Island and a little bit of Lost for this sexvid. You can’t go wrong showing beautiful people screwing in a tropical paradise, and that’s exactly what Eden does. Though there are hints of a story here, it’s never developed, and that’s a shame, because when the twist ending happens, not a lot has led up to it. Otherwise, Tommy Gunn and Evan Stone are two of the most dependable male performers and actors in porn, and pairing them with Carmen Luvana, Ava Rose and Bree Olson means you don’t need much story if you don’t want it. This is a nicely shot movie whose visuals and chemical-laden sexual pairings will keep it in the minds of fans, but, again, it could have been more if it had let itself.

While I enjoyed each of these movies for any numbers of reasons and think all are worthy of attention for porn fans, soon I’ll be writing about what I consider to be the two best adult features released in 2007. The awards-givers agreed with me, by the way.

So, to be continued...
