P-P-P-Porn?!: Critical Care for Bad Girls

Digital Playground continues its hot streak with BAD GIRLS and NURSES
by L. Pete Morton

One of the great things about adult studio Digital Playground is that they have many identities. They do top of the line gonzo porn with their “Jack’s Playground” and other “Jack’s” titles. They do luxurious, artful sun-drenched porn in their “Island Fever” series. They do fun, horror-inspired porn with their “Scream” series. But possibly the all-around most enjoyable of these offerings is their “occupation” series, previously featuring BABYSITTERS and CHEERLEADERS. Now they offer us NURSES.

NURSES brings together all the Digital Playground contract performers: Jesse Jane, Stoya, Shay Jordan, Katsuni, Riley Steele and Gabriella Fox, while mixing in visitors Sasha Grey, Jenna Haze, Shyla Stylez and Shawna Lenee. They also bring in (mostly) top shelf male performers: Evan Stone, Tommy Gunn, Erik Everhard, James Deen, Scott Nails, Manuel Ferrara, Danny Mountain, Mr. Pete, and Tony. T., plus Johnny Sins in a bafflingly truncated non-sex role (I’m betting there’s a cut scene somewhere).

Playing out more as a series of vignettes than a true feature, a fleet of sexy nurses and candy stripers treat the patients and at Coos County Hospital with extra special TLC. As enjoyable and well-produced as the whole affair is, I must admit I would have preferred a real storyline to act as the spine of the film (Riley having a bad day and Erik attempting to get all the girls to bend over to pick up stuff are fine, but something a little more substantial should have anchored the whole affair). Other than that, the movie hits all the marks I expect it set for itself by simply showcasing some of the best performers in the adult world at the moment. Particular kudos go out to Lenee, Grey, Katsuni, and Stoya, who all seem particularly on point this go-around. The best scene in the feature pairs Stoya and Deen, which works particularly well because of the clear affection between the two performers. Chemistry is an elusive beast in any film, anywhere, so I recommend Digital Playground book these two together again in the future.

NURSES is the sort of movie which casual porn fans will buy by the truckload because of its high production values and its attractive and enthusiastic cast, not to mention its clear fetishistic appeal. While I do wish it would reach a little further than it does, it is clearly going to be one of 2009’s most noteworthy adult films and will remain one of those few adult movies with a long and distinguished shelf life.

Digital Playground, already a major player with their aforementioned, award-winning “Jack’s” series of gonzo porn, are branching out with yet another gonzo series, though this one seem to be more specifically focused on their stable of contract players. Their first installment of BAD GIRLS specifically features Gabriella Fox, Shay Jordan and Stoya, with visitors Serena Del Rio and Kelly Summer.

Before any dialogue about the movie itself, it should be noted that BAD GIRLS is the one-hundredth release on Blu-Ray for Digital Playground. Whether on not one cares for the content of a certain porn film or other (and taste in porn is as subjective as it is anywhere else, maybe even more so), the fact that Digital Playground has staked its claim to presenting its images and sound in the best commercially available format speaks volumes about a topic I broached earlier, production value. Some people will always prefer grainy, amateur-looking stuff, but if porn, as I believe, can be considered an artistically viable avenue, producers of it absolutely have to consider the way their product is sold. Something in Blu-Ray doesn’t automatically make it any more watchable, but issuing a movie in the format keeps you in the conversation, and who doesn’t want to be a part of that?

While BAD GIRLS is a very good title all on its own, with several other gonzo vignette themed titles also by director Robby D., I hope BAD GIRLS can differentiate itself from Digital Playground’s other gonzo releases. Every pairing in the movie features light bondage elements, but that makes the girls more slightly naughty than out-and-out “bad”. Despite a few quibbles over verbiage, it’s nice to see Gabriella Fox and Shay Jordan, who have reportedly departed the company, in two strong scenes, with Gabriella’s being probably the best she performed in her short tenure. The draw of BAD GIRLS, however, is Stoya in her first boy/boy/girl scene.

Stoya may well be the best thing going at Digital Playground right now. Not to slight their obvious star, Jesse Jane, but Stoya is a porcelain-skinned girl next door with a naughty streak who exudes an intellectual charisma rare in porn. Despite the appeal for some of seeing her in a threesome, I must admit I prefer her scene in NURSES, but her presence is also the extraordinary element in BAD GIRLS.
