Watched the pretty decent, straight-to-video serial-killer tale Spreading Ground last night and was surprised in seeing that it was directed by Derek Vanlint, who, for those who don't know, superbly photographed Alien and Dragonslayer. Well, checking up on him at imdb.com I was shocked to discover that after 1981's Dragonslayer, Spreading Ground -- which he also made his directorial debut with (and did a decent job) -- was his first lighting gig in 19 years! And he hasn't done anything since 2000's Spreading Ground, at that.

What gives?

So disappointing, in fact, that even you can't spell his name right.

But he's not the only one: Look at Jack Cardiff's filmography after he decided to become a director.

1. Whoops. Evidence that I wrote this before my morning Diet Coke!

2. At least Cardiff went back to cinematography, doing such notable work in the '80s in The Dogs of War and Rambo: First Blood.

3. According to imdb, Vanlint is a member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, and Spreading Ground is the only thing he's done in Canada. He was previously with the British Society of Cinematographers.

Interesting stuff Jack. Who knows that happened.

And now that you mention it, another puzzling mystery for me is Peter Glenville.

Apparently, he was a noted stage director, and then he made a handful of forgotten films until with Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton, he made the movie Becket, which was nominated for a remarkable 12 oscars, including noms for Peter and Richard, as well as best director and best pic nods. He then made 2 more movies, appeared on an episode of a show, and then vanished without a trace before the 60's were even over.

So, who knows what happened to him.

Another guy, Bennett Miller, made his directorial debut in 1998 with The Cruise, he then made his next film 7 years later with Capote. He then vanished yet again. (WAIT! He's actually begun preproduction stages on his new movie due out tentatively in 2011; so he likes making movies every 7 years, interesting...)

After seeing "The Cruise," I wanted Miller to vanish (God, I hated that thing). He made up for it with "Capote," though.

Award-winning cinematographer Gordon Willis made his directorial debut with this lesbian-thriller called Windows, which apparently was so inept and offensive that angry viewers called the studio and told them to promise that they'd never let him direct again. And so far he hasn't.

I think Gordon Willis hasn't directed again because he is now an Asian call girl in Manhattan, but I may have read that incorrectly.
