MAY 16 | LOS ANGELES--Sony gaming execs said today that the company's next-generation game console will hit market in spring 2006.

PlayStation 3 had been thought to bow in Japan this fall and in North America a year later.

The system, which as previously announced will feature the Blu-ray high-definition format, will be wi-fi capable, allow the use of up to seven wireless controllers and feature greatly enhanced Internet-interface capabilities, officials said.

Execs also touted "movie-quality" visual and graphics on PS3.

Sony held its press conference on the Sony lot in Culver City, Calif., on the eve of the E3 videogame confab. E3 opens Wednesday at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with news also expected this week on next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Nintendo.
