There's been a couple of things annoying me lately, could someone help? Being a Brit, I have no idea what the word 'ornery' means? What the hell is that? Is that just an American word?

And what, exactly, is meant by a 'shit-eating grin'? Why would you grin if you eat shit?

Back to the theasarus for me...

Ornery = Agitated; often used when describing Yosemite Sam

Shit-Eating Grin - A fake smile, or one amplified to a exaggerated degree so as to make an ironic point. I think.

Ornery - cantankerous, disagreeable. Like TAJ says, Yosemite Sam is a perfect example. Usually makes one think of a mean old man, one who isn't mean out of maliciousness, but out of bitterness.

Shit-Eating Grin - Usually mirth on the displayer's part over something they have gotten away with or are about to.

Ah, it all makes sense now...

Cheers guys, I shall now attempt to use the word 'ornery' at least twice daily.
