Obama wins the Peace Prize.

Excuse me, but what has Obama done exactly on the international front? Or is "not being George W. Bush" enough of an argument to tip the scales in your favour?

Reports say the award is intended to encourage Obama rather than honor his (so far) nonexistent accomplishments. Which is a bit like giving him the Chemistry prize in anticipation of his future discovery of the AIDS vaccine.

They're also saying the award is intended as a rejection of GWB's policies. Of course, the Nobel brainiacs have done that several times already, with Jimmy Carter (2002) and Al Gore (2007).

I bet Bill Clinton's out there moaning, "Where's mine?"

Maybe they felt bad that Chicago didn't get the Olympics.

Can you imagine what GOPers would be doing if Democrats were glad that, say, McCain failed at getting Phoenix for the Olympics? That's right -- unpatrotic! Still, even though I voted for Obama I don't think the award is justified. At least he's giving the $1.4 million prize money to charity.

First, on the question of Obama's Nobel: If the eyebrow-raising only came from Republicans, nobody would give a damn about it; we'd just dismiss it as the partisan knee-jerk reaction that it would be. But it's not just the Republicans, and it's not confined to the US; even the press around here is questioning the award to a man who seemingly did so little to deserve it, apart from getting elected. And there are reports that the Scandinavian press is equally bemused.

At worst, though, you could accuse the Nobel Committee of blatant political interference. Which, considering that this is what the US is doing on a regular basis, is perhaps a nice way to strike back, but not from behind the cover of a respectable institution. (By the way, does anyone remember last year's controversy over the Literature prize, when the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy had the gall to say American literature was too insular, too ignorant, too "sensitive to trends in their own mass culture"? Last American winner: Toni Morrison in 1993. Hooray for tokenism.)

As for the Olympics, you don't hear the Spanish going through a national soul-searching effort after Madrid lost; for that matter, you don't hear anyone doing that with their Olympic contenders except the United States. The biggest controversy I remember was when Quebec City lost to Salt Lake City for the 2002 games in what was not even a close race. We didn't go through how our national character had lost us the bid; we were furious that we were told we had a chance in the first place when the whole thing, it was later revealed, was obtained through bribery.

And really, what was the last Olympic Games hosted by the US that didn't turn into unmemorable crap rife with so much commercialism that it made other Olympics appear as frugal charity efforts by comparison? Salt Lake? Nope. Atlanta? Hell no. L.A.?

He doesn't deserve any prize at all. He has not done any good to the country after he got elected.
