Our brains are wired to recognize faces. While these covers look silly individually, when you put them on a shelf with fifty other movies, the person browsing will zero in on the ones with faces he or she recognizes, giving it a much better chance of being picked up, examined, and dropped in the shopping basket.

Or at least, that's how it was explained to me once.
