The Best Movie Article This Summer!"* (*And you can quote me on that!) by John Larsen, Ventura County Reporter

CRITICWATCH CREEDO
Over the years at Criticwatch, we have kept a watchful eye on the critical community. Sure, there are several critics we don't agree with, but its not taste that makes you a whore. We can disagree seven ways from Sunday, but from the beginning this has always been about who you can trust. Some of the critics on our list are junket whores or scoop sluts; instantly untrustworthy if the label means anything. Others like "The Big 2" (Peter Travers & Kevin Thomas) seem to like just about everything and get their names in the papers more than the President. That’s why they now have their own awards named after them (“The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award” & “The Kevin Thomas Sloppy Seconds”)

For the past few years, we've left many name-names off of the list. Not because we're being hypocritical, but due to our belief that these people were (1) not whores and (2) didn't have the most unfathomable taste imaginable. Roger Ebert is the most recognizable name in the profession, so it only makes sense that he should be the most quoted critic in the game.

So taking into account that Roger Ebert should be your #1 and the trademark "Two Thumbs Up" is just as prevalent, see where everyone else ranks. Are we being too harsh? Or are they being too easy? (RED = The HBS/EFC Seal of Disapproval)

PETER TRAVERS
(Rolling Stone)
Movie Reviews
(2002 Whore Ranking - #1)
(2003 Whore Ranking – The Peter Travers Whore of the Year Award Created!)
(2004 – 61 Quotes)
(2005 – 65 Quotes)

Travers has long been the Rolling Stone film critic, but wasn't always a shill. For a long time he was a respected writer, but over he last few years it's become more and more clear that he's just out to get Rolling Stone some free publicity. Just like sports bonuses for achievement. Think about it.

Hollywood Elsewhere 2/4/03 (Movie Poop Shoot)
"Does Peter Travers win the flat-footed medal for all eternity? Has he ever written a negative review, or even a mildly critic one? Have you ever seen an ad for the worst movie ever? It'll have a rave from ROLLING STONE, dollars to donuts. I just assume if he likes it and the rest of the quotes are from some AM radio guy in Tulsa, that the movie sucks."Post-Production Polly

"Peter Travers is a wash as a critic now, and probably for all time. Any time his name is within 4 font-size points of the film title, blink and move on."Los Angeles-based indie filmmaker

EGO TRIP ALERT
The Kansas City Star

“The quotes you read of mine, alongside Roger Ebert and all the top-notch critics, has totally helped my career as a film critic and my credibility,” Edwards says. It’s time someone took Edwards down a peg. The group can be contacted at (323) 969-4804 or info@aafca.com

FROM THE COLUMN OF KANSAS CITY STAR’S HEARNE CHRISTOPHER
Help! Shawn Edwards Wants American Idol
Edwards Responds To Variety’s Timothy Gray
“Here's my deal. My job as a critic is to appreciate the whole spectrum of cinema. As a critic I'm allowed my opinion. I don't understand these guys. I think as a younger guy I have a wider appreciation for all types of film. I mean, everything is not going to be a ‘Citizen Kane.' But I've been quoted on two of the five movies nominated for best picture, too. So my taste can't be all that bad. I liked ‘White Chicks,' and that film did $75 million. I'm not ashamed. I also like ‘Million Dollar Baby' and ‘Ray.' But I don't like everything. I did not like ‘Sideways.'”

Edwards Quits KC Film Circle. Cites Jealousy On Members!
“They're not trying to support the totality of cinema and a diverse viewpoint,” Edwards says. “To me it's nothing but a big clique of film geeks — that's why I resigned. I'm not going to be a part of that. I don't need to be a part of a group that supports negativity.” “If they want to fire arrows at me, that's fine, but I think they're firing arrows out of jealousy and envy,” Edwards counters. “If I like a movie or don't like a movie, fine, who cares? Why are they so concerned over what my views are? I don't understand what's been done that's wrong. I mean movies and quotes go together like 7-Elevens and Slurpees.” The Film Snobs Respond To Edwards

And Edwards Responds Back
I give them credit, at least they're watching,” Edwards quips. “But obviously they didn't pay that close attention because we did a 10 worst (movies) last year and I didn't not like ‘Sideways,' I gave it a three (out of five).” (Editor’s Note: Upon review of the actual tape where Shawn reviews Sideways, he gives it a TWO out of five, NOT THREE!)

Quote from Miss Adams in the CNN piece on Criticwatch (08/28/03): "The expectation [of the studios] is that [reviewers will] come up with something quotable in one sentence," says Us magazine reviewer Thelma Adams. "It's part of the give-and-take." There are also the reviewers who "will say anything to get their name in the paper," she continues. "They won't go out of their way to write a positive review, but ... they'll play ball" for the glory of their own words in extra-large type, publication duly noted. "It's free advertising for your publication," she adds. “

Steven Robertson and James McAvoy are unforgettable...audacious and funny. We're lucky to have them. And we're lucky to have Rory O'Shea Was Here. Wonderful.
Sahara - Suspense! Comedy! Romance! Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz score in this high-spirited romantic adventure.
Fever Pitch - A grand slam comedy.
Kung Fu Hustle - A feast so funny that one hour later, I couldn't wait to see it again! And I liked it even better the 3rd time!
Madagascar - A wonderfull-of-fun film...Madagascar is Zooperlative.
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants - A rarity: Truthful, intelligent, and perceptively performed - an unheralded sleeper that's wide awake with life.
Cinderella Man - Absolutely the best movie of the year so far. By Far. A masterwork…Ron Howard is one of the world’s preeminent directors.
War of the Worlds - This is Tom Cruise's finest performance. Steven Spielberg's new film is amazing!
Fantastic Four - Brilliant! Fantastic Four-Everyone. A+ A spectacle of razzle-dazzle.
Must Love Dogs - Everything a terrific romantic comedy is cracked up to be. Diane Lane and John Cusack are irresistible.
An Unfinished Life - A refreshingly original film. Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman show what outstanding acting is all about.
The Thing About My Folks - Marvelous, touching, funny and true to the heart.
Corpse Bride - Wonderful songs...Funny characters and a wonderful story by a star-filled cast. A rattling good time...No bones about it.
The Greatest Game Ever Played - Masterful
Elizabethtown - As in Jerry Maguire, Cameron Crowe succeeds again with an unforgettable romantic encounter.
North Country - North Country is a triumph – the most emotionally overwhelming movie of the year. Fiery, wrenching and exalting
The Weather Man - Nicolas Cage and Michael Caine are acting royalty. In The Weather Man, they continue to reign! The picture is mesmerizing. Gorgeously directed by Gore Verbinski and Steven Conrad’s screenplay is sad, funny, neurotic and sane.
Jarhead - A masterwork. An immediate classic, sure to endure as one of the greatest of all wartime films. Its glory is in its understatement, its frightening quietude. The actors are so true to life, every one should be decorated. The images are breathtaking, and William Broyles’ dog-face dialogue drills the air. Jarhead is more than a movie – it’s an experience. Director Sam Mendes has made a masterwork.
King Kong - Peter Jackson has created a spellbinding epic. King Kong is so gargantuan that I must create new words to describe it: fabularious…a brilliantological humongousness of marvelosity.
