I'm reminded of just how miraculous Tim Robbins' performance is in that excellent film. Just re-watched him in Bull Durham last night, and the eclectic string of characters he's played is truly phenomenal. As for the film, I honestly don't know what any director thinks he or she could bring to the project that Adrian Lyne didn't; nor what any writer couldn't incorporate that the original's talented screenwriter didn't. And being that the original wasn't exactly a box-office sensation, remaking it doesn't make any more sense.
Hope the remake goes down in fucking flames. _________________ "Joe the Plumber -- you can quote me -- is a dumbass." -- Meghan McCain |

It makes sense in that it became very popular on video, and the name recognition among horror fans is huge.
On the other hand, it makes no sense because those fans would hate a remake, while the horror remake crowd (teens who went to see House of Wax and such) wouldn't care for a methodical psychological thriller. So unless they're planning on turning this into a slasher flick or something, I don't get it. |

Never cared for the flick myself. _________________ But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

Never seen it actually.

I wonder if they're going to keep the twist ending, which wasn't terribly fresh back then and is considerably less so now, given that a certain very famous film has since used the same gimmick.

| I never actually thought the twist in the film was supposed to be a surprise, given that the filmmakers give it away blatantly throughout. I think the tension and suspense is supposed to come, right around the middle of the film or so, from our desire for Jacob to accept what we now know to be true. At least, that's how the movie's always worked for me. |

The first time I saw it, I didn't like it much, but repeated viewings have left me a fan. Great, another remake no one wants. _________________ "The critic is the only independent source of information. The rest is advertising."- Pauline Kael |
