Hard Rain
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Ryan Arthur

"A movie with all that water where nobody drowns? What?"
2 stars

By-the-book action fare, but maybe you'll like it.

There are a few decent moments in Hard Rain, most of them involving Minnie Driver in a wet t-shirt.

That having been said, there's really nothing in this movie you haven't seen before. It's basically a caper film (robbery/heist), mixed in with the "man-versus-nature" element (the flood that threatens the town and its inhabitants) plus the morally ambiguous "good guy" (Randy Quaid, in this case). It's conventional with a few flashes of coolness.

Tom and Charlie (Christian Slater and Ed Asner) are transferring money from a bank in an Indiana town that's in danger of being wiped out by a flood. But a band of robbers, led by Jim (Morgan Freeman) wants to take that money. The bank truck gets stuck, the robbers show up and shoot Charlie (perhaps not intentionally), and Tom decides to fight back, hiding the money beneath the rapidly rising water, and hiding out. The locals are no help: the sheriff (Quaid) keeps eyeing that money for himself, but he's got idiots for deputies and quite get his hands on it. Then there's Karen (Driver, in a thankless role) who becomes a would-be love interest/hostage.

Like I said, you've seen it all before.

That's not to say it's done badly. The opening shots are pretty cool, and there's a chase sequence through a waterlogged high school on jet ski's that's actually pretty interesting. But you spend the rest of the movie wondering just when the plot will break out of formula mode (ironic, since it was written by Speed scribe Graham Yost), and you can't help but notice that the movie was filmed in a water tank. At least with Titanic you didn't notice that.

Slater does his Nicholson ripoff yet again, and Freeman seems to be on autopilot (anyone else catch the veiled reference: Tom and Jim on a river?). Director Mikael Saloman (cinematographer for The Abyss) does merely average work with what he's given.

Strictly by the numbers stuff. There's better action movies to veg out to.
