Oldboy (2005)

"Overhyped fanboy action stalls at mediocrity."
3 stars

Is anyone surprised that an Asian action flick placed second at the Cannes Film Festival the same year Quentin Tarantino headed the jury? The film, “Oldboy,” is a great example of how subtitles do not guarantee a high quality film. Sure, the film probably looked great against “Ladykillers” and “Shrek 2” at Cannes, but in the grand scheme of cinema, the picture is little more than an average rough-and-tumble fight flick.

There is something genuinely interesting about a man being locked in tiny room for fifteen years for seemingly no reason. Perhaps that’s what gives Chan-wook Park’s “Oldboy” so much promise. The first act is a claustrophobic nightmare, as Dae-su (Min-sik Choi) is forced to inhabit a single, windowless room somewhere in Tokyo. He occasionally gets food slid through a slot in the door, his only contact to the outside world is a small TV set and he passes the time by trying to put holes in the wall.

When the opening is as strong as this, however, it’s easy to get complacent with the rest of the film. After Dae-su is released from his cell, the film gets overly complex as the film alternately reveals and conceals a set of dirty little secrets about Dae-su and his connection with captor Woo-jin (Ji-tae Yu). Befriending a kindly, but crazy, waitress (Hye-jeong Kang), the film transforms into an unnecessary romance in the midst of a mystery, as Dae-su has five days to discover the reason he was locked up for so many years.

But by the point Dae-su wakes on his mysterious roof from his mysterious imprisonment, the only mystery left is why we should care. More than just another mindless action film, the story sets Dae-su up as the reluctant hero whose dilemma makes him worth caring about. The problem is the film never bothers to set him up as a character we should care about. Any back story is tossed out to make the imprisonment more confusing, but we also lose any motivation to connect with the character.

That, though, is the three screenwriters’ problem. As the director, Park nearly manages to save the film through some fantastic cinematic moments. The most notable moment is also clearly the fan favorite. Dae-su eventually manages to find the location of his fifteen year prison, which leads to one-take, knuckle down street fight in the building’s narrow hallway. Much like “Kill Bill, Vol. 1,” the fight pits a lone hero against a vast assortment of enemies, but the extreme style of Tarantino is traded in for dirty realism. The fight isn’t clean or quick; it’s just fantastically harsh.

“Oldboy” could do better to trade in those moments for a stronger story. By the time the pieces starting fitting together, the film has degraded into just another typical action flick. The sweet moments that might have set this movie apart — Dae-su and his girlfriend bracketing the film by wearing a pair of toy angel wings — are buried under excessively violent action, explicit sex and a taboo mystery that is more groan-worthy than satisfying.

If you’re just looking for a film that features a messed-up Korean man eat a live squid, “Oldboy” may be worth the price of admission. If you’re looking for something more than that, however, this one might be one to skip.
