"A creepy, scary, 'can't-take-your-eyes-off-the-screen' horror film."
4 stars

'Dead Birds' is a very cool horror film. Be that as it may, the film is also a very strange and enjoyable Western. What I liked so much about this film is that it will please two types of fans, those who like westerns and those who like horror films. It is this reviewers kind of film. Buy it, rent it, borrow it, but make sure and see it!

The film opens in Alabama, and the first scene begins in the classic western style. In this case, a gang who is going to rob a bank enter the town. Western fans will spot the classic western style immediately. I love westerns and I thought what a great movie this is going to be. I was right.

WARNING - In order to review this film and discuss its meaning, I have to reveal the ending. So . . . if you don't want to know what happens in the end, please don't read this until after you have seen the film.

Even though film has many elements of a western, it is really a horror film. When the bad men rob the bank, it is a bloody gory affair, and that is consistent with the style of a horror film. But it gets better. Things get very creepy.

After the robbery, the outlaws have to hide out in what they assume is a deserted plantation, but that is not the case. The supernatural begins to makes itself known, and the outlaws start fighting with each other.

This is the point where the story becomes fascinating. In a horror film set in the present, the characters in the film are in the modern world and you could assume that they would have seen horror films in their fictional world. Therefore, the characters are bringing to the situation they are experiencing in the movie certain pre-existing assumptions about the nature of horror. Now, for the characters going through a horror experience in the Old West, they are not likely to have had any experience with horror stories. (Unless they had read Edgar Allan Poe.) Because the characters in the film have no real experience with the concept of horror, the experience the characters are going through in the film will be so new to them in concept that they will really be like fishes out of water.

The film ends tragically, as one expect with a horror film. However, the ending suggests the idea that the plantation where the horror takes place is cursed. The fate of the characters suggests this, and what we can assume will be the fate of the two soldiers walking toward the house also suggests the concept of the plantation being cursed.

'Dead Birds' is a brilliant film, a clever intermingling of two different genres. Make sure and buy the DVD.
