Blade: Trinity

"Enjoyable yet underwhelming"
3 stars

One would've hoped for a better end to the Blade series, instead of a lackluster sequel wrapped up in a 90 minute Ipod commercial.

Was Wesley Snipes reading his lines off cue cards? Was he heavily drugged? I don't know, but Blade Trinity never managed to take off like the previous Blade chapters did.

David S. Goyer has proven himself a talented screenwriter, but as a director, his latest offering never seems to find any pacing or wow with any amount of anticipation or kinesis. Almost every action scene is flatter than Jennifer Garner's chest. I mean, Jennifer Garner's chest isn't a bad thing, but you know all along that something more than a push-up bra is needed...something like A MEAL, for instance. Blade Trinity seems to have plenty of skeleton, but little meat and style on top. And with a comic book movie, style is as important as substance, sometimes more so.

The actors aren't to blame. The Blade character takes backstage to the Nightstalkers, the new vampire hunters on the block. This would've been fine, but this is a Blade movie, not a Nightstalkers movie. The problem is, these characters aren't all that interesting with the exception of Hannibal King, Reynolds' character. Snipes seems forced to act out of character, and I hear there were many rewrites during filming, which understandably lead to tension between Goyer and Snipes. This tension is very evident in the film. The actors really aren't to blame, it's the director that sank what could've been a worthy finale. Parker Posey is wonderful, despite her surprisingly subdued performance....I suppose she was expecting her fake vampire teeth to bounce off Ryan Reynold's forehead as she spat out her lines. Jessica Biel is a babe, regardless of her heavily edited fight scenes and the large check that Steve Jobs undoubtedly sent her agent upon completion of the film. When the Apple Ipod warrants its own film credit as a character, something is very wrong in Bladesville.

What ultimately sinks the picture, aside from the egregious product placement, is Goyer's sloppy direction, a weak screenplay, and horrible editing. Every action scene involves multiple angles, MTV video slow-motion, and flat pacing. It's really frustrating to watch.

Sometimes the third time ISN'T the charm.
