"Come and revel in the unique brand of humor that is Monty Python"
All Monty Python films divide an audience into two groups: those who "get it" and those who don't. If you're a fan of deadpan, british humour (note the spelling, I'm one of those who get it) then this movie is like having your first orgasm over and over again. If you're not, well, you can take your pick from the billions of crappy efforts made by the Saturday Night Live alums. Note: If it will get you to view it, it shows quite a distaste for french people. A common thread that unites us all. This movie is very loosely based on the exploits of King Arthur and his knights during their quest to retreive the holy grail.
I honestly cannot see how someone could find this movie unfunny. As noted before, it seems that you either love Monty Python material or you don't. It is simply that cut and dry, there is no gray area.
There are two reasons MP films work so well:
The first is the contrast between their dry, deadpan style and the outlandishness and absurdity of the situations they deal with. It is inherently funny and they are the masters of it. I mean, come on, when you watch this film you are watching brilliance as noted by the common man and the bigwig alike.
The second is the fact that this ensemble has been together for so long that their comedic timing and ability to play off of each other is simply remarkable. Don't get me wrong the dialogue they have written is hilarious on it's own, but in their hands, the rhythm and timing is insanely good. A pause here and subtle look there, stuff that is just not written into a script.
There are so many funny things about this movie: the snooty frenchmen, the swallow dialogue, Tim the enchanter, the knights who say nee, the cave of Kyer Banog, I could go on and on and on. If you've seen it, you know. If you haven't, I implore you to get your hands on it.Even if you're not a fan of limey humor, give this movie a chance. If you haven't seen it, rent it. If you don't like it, you're still only out three bucks but if you do, you will have discovered one of the few, small gems that make life's drudgery a little easier to swallow.
