Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005)

"Marriage, American style '05!"
4 stars

The new romantic action comedy, MR. AND MRS. SMITH, by director Doug Liman ("Swingers", "Go", "The Bourne Identity") plays like a steamy update of those screwball battle-of-the-sexes comedies of the '30s. Except with explosions and car chases and such.

John and Jane Smith (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, in case ya didn't know) are at a crisis in their marriage. Too involved in their respective careers to do much more than go through the motions at home and, even then, just barely. The rub is, of course, that both are assassins-for-hire at competing agencies, a fact that they have managed to keep from one another over the five (or six) years they've been married. When both are assigned the same target the truth comes out and, once they get over trying to kill one another, so do the lies (in response to being told that Jane's parents really died when she was five and were merely played by actors at their wedding John responds, "I knew I saw your father on Fantasy Island).

Forced into the dependence upon one another that had been previously absent in their relationship the Smiths will have to truly be partners if they are to literally survive. It is to their credit that both Pitt and Jolie are more than up to the challenge, creating one of the most fluid, sexy and comedic bickering couples in recent memory. Yes, there is plenty of sexual chemistry between the stars, but what comes even more to the fore is their natural camaraderie and effortless comic interplay. These Smiths are characters I would like to see again.

Creating a niche for himself as the go-to comic actor of the moment (think: Bill Murray back around the time of Tootsie), Vince Vaughan steals nearly every scene he's in as John's divorced business partner who's reduced to living at home with his mom. Unfortunately, almost every one of his scenes is featured in the trailer, which puts a somewhat perfunctory, abbreviated taint on his character. Similarly, as a junior agent, Adam Brody (TV's The O.C.) gets off a few snappy one-liners in accordance with his established television persona, but his talents are pretty much wasted here.

Nevertheless, this is the Brad and Angelina show and not since Robert Rodriguez's Desperado have two actors looked so good kicking ass. As he did in both Ocean's 11 and 12 Pitt emanates a cool, casual comic charm that is refreshing, especially in the wake of the oh-so-serious Troy. Likewise, Jolie has a twinkle in her eye throughout that hasn't been there since her Oscar-winning turn in 1999's Girl, Interrupted.

The screenplay by Simon Kinberg is chock full of wonderfully witty banter (regarding the new drapes: "If you don't like them we'll take them back", "Okay, I don't like them", "You'll get used to them"), expertly handled by the leads, and director Liman expertly keeps the film on track, handling the transformation from observational comedy to full-out action flick deftly, while maintaining the same screwball tone throughout (a wild shoot-'em-up chase with Jane commandeering a mini-van is but one example), the underlying message being that couples must communicate, must "let it out", or risk marital atrophy. Of course, I could be wrong, and MAMS could just be a great big fun popcorn/date movie.

But as the summer movie season comes rolling in in earnest with its usual batch of empty promises MR. AND MRS. SMITH delivers, and that is more than most of the supposed "Summer Blockbusters" will do (Nora Ephron's BEWITCHED?!). So take your significant other and see something of yourselves (albeit a better looking version, I'd wager) up there on the screen, or take the whole family and enjoy the giddiest action film of the year to date.
