2001 Maniacs

"Bloody, bloody, bloody good fun."
4 stars

I used to hate horror movies. When I was eight or nine, I caught a bit of one that had a guy in a bathroom full of blood and then he got pulled into the toilet by a bloody hand. I didn’t watch another horror movie for about ten years. Now I watch movies like “2001 Maniacs,” a very, very bloody Southern romp full of massacred college kids and crazy cannibals. If you’re squeamish, skip it. If you’re not, you’ve got to see it. This is B-grade camp at its bloody best.

On your way from Connecticut to Daytona Beach for spring break, you get lost in the backwoods of Georgia. You, your two best friends and your cherry convertible see a sign that says “Detour,” but when you follow it, you end up in a small town straight out of the ‘60s…the 1860s. There’s no modern technology or signs of civilization of any kind, just lots and lots of Confederate flags. All of a sudden, the entire town rushes your car and the mayor — a creepy old man with a Confederate flag eyepatch — welcomes you as the guests of honor at their celebration. To convince you (and the two groups that follow) to stay, he offers to placate you with food, clothes, alcohol and his slutty, nubile children. What kind of idiot do you have to be to decide and stick around to play with these freaks?

You’d be the kind of idiot that stars in a direct-to-DVD horror movie remake of a 1960s cult B-grade gorefest. You’d also be the kind of idiot that’s going to die a horrible, painful death. With the recent PG-13-ification of horror, the genre has become more about otherworldly scares than blood, ghosts rather than slow-moving slashers. If you’re looking for the kind of movie that features ghosts crawling out of the TV, the boogeyman pulling people into closets and stalkers with cell phones, you’re barking up the wrong blood-soaked tree. “2001 Maniacs” is about pure, unadulterated gore. Heads will roll, eyes will pop, limbs will be torn from their sockets and buckets of blood will pour from, well, everywhere.

Much of this gore will come from the three New England college students that first stumble upon the sleepy town of Pleasant Valley. Anonymous white guys No. 1-3 are soon joined by blond girl, brunette girl, gay guy, black guy and Asian girl. The college kids actually have names like Anderson, Ricky, Kat and Leah, but the names are just the film’s MacGuffin — you won’t care which guy is Corey and which is Nelson when they’re getting their insides melted. In fact, the only characters that do matter are the town’s sadistic Mayor Buckman (Robert Englund, aka Freddy Krueger) and sweet old homicidal Granny Boone (underappreciated character actress Lin Shaye). The pair are in charge of the town’s annual celebration Bar-B-Que, which, as the tag line “You are what they eat” will tell you, the kids are invited to…as the meal.

The first film from Eli Roth’s Raw Nerve productions, “2001 Maniacs” is in the same vein as Roth’s “Cabin Fever” — part sick comedy, part teen sex romp, large part bloodbath. The movie even features a cameo from Roth as Justin, his “Fever” character. In addition to all the blood, “2001 Maniacs” features plenty of gratuitous boob shots, gay and lesbian sex, a couple into S&M and enough un-PC jokes to make you squirm as you chuckle. With all the Confederate flags around, it shouldn’t come as a shock, but the town’s lone black character runs around trying to serve watermelon. Of course, he has to watch out that he doesn’t run into one of the mayor’s kids as he chases his sheep around town (yes, the lad’s pants are around his ankles). If you’re not offended by this movie, something is very wrong with you, but if you’re watching this movie in the first place, something is very wrong with you. Since I’m recommending this movie to you, what does that say about me?

I should caveat this by saying not everyone is going to like this movie. “2001 Maniacs” is not the type of rare horror movie that will transcend the genre boundaries and become a must-see. “2001 Maniacs” is not “Psycho.” It’s not “Halloween.” It’s not even “Scream.” But if you’re one of those horror junkies that’s seen every entry in the Halloween series (even the dismal Michael Myers-less “Halloween 3”), “2001 Maniacs” is good, campy, gory fun. After all, any movie that features a violent cameo from country crooner Travis Tritt has to be a good time, right?

Sometimes I wonder what it’d be like if Robert Englund was a classically trained Shakespearean actor. What would we all do if he up and left horror to appear in “King Lear” or “Henry VIII”? Would the world cease to exist? Just something to think about while you watch him disembowel college kids.
