Transporter 2

"Mindless action mayhem anchored by Statham's bad-ass presence"
3 stars

If you've not yet seen "The Transporter," and you're wondering what you need to know in order to enjoy "Transporter 2," here it is: Jason Statham is a professional driver who kicks a whole lot of ass. Period. Anything else is filler, plain and simple. And judging this sequel based solely upon its eclectic array of action sequences, well, let's just say you matinee-dwellers will absolutely get your six dollars' worth.

I'll keep this short and sweet: Transporter 2 is precisely what it looks like, which means you won't get a whole lot of brilliant surprises, but if you watched the trailer and thought "Hey, neat-o," then the flick will capably deliver what you're expecting: car chases, gun battles, and fast-paced fisticuffs up the wazoo. You're looking for deep thoughts, well-constructed characters, and a narrative arc that's not insane? Wait a few months until Oscar Season kicks off. This is September, movie fans, which means you take what you're given ... and Transporter 2 manages to give a lot, at least in the high-octane lunacy department.

Reprising his role from 2002's The Transporter is Jason Statham, that laconic and ultra-cool character actor you'll probably remember from Snatch, The Italian Job and/or Cellular. Statham returns as the no-nonsense mercenary chauffeur known as Frank Martin. The consummate professional, Frank will handle any paying gig that comes down the pike, and he knows full well the importance of trust, low-key discretion, a swanky suit, and the ability to kick several person's asses at the same time.

This time out, Frank is enlisted to protect a small boy. Not surprisingly, said boy is promptly kidnapped by a group of terrorists with a massive grudge, and they have some decidedly unpleasant things planned for the adorable tot. So off Frank goes, flipping cars, kicking rears, and using firehoses as weapons. Suffice to say that Frank won't stop the chop-sock until little Jackie Billings is safe in his mother's arms -- and woe is the sleazy henchman who stands in Martin's way.

This is Statham's show all the way, and the irrepressably intense British boy has worked pretty hard to build himself a body of work that yells "bad ass character actor." With someone else on board as "the transporter," this series could prove to be a fairly interminable chore. But Statham's got gravelly grit and slick screen presence by the bucketful, and it's easy to just enjoy the guy's no-bullshit performance as the kinetic lunacy continues unabated.

Transporter 2 is a perfectly outlandish and tight-knuckled little action flick, a mindless piece of well-hewn escapism that delivers several borderline-retarded moments of action mayhem -- but does it with such style and attitude that one can't help but play along. While it's true that many of the action set-pieces found within Transporter 2 come dangerously close to the outright stupidity found in action flicks like xXx: State of the Union, there's cocked eyebrow and tongue-in-cheek demeanor that clearly indicate the filmmakers are in on the joke. And while it's true that several of the loonier stunts will have you rolling your eyeballs in "oh, come on!" incredulity, the simple fact is that Transporter 2 is quick, crafty, and just kooky enough to make for a sunny afternoon trip to the flicks.

It's got an ultra-cool hero, an amazingly hot (albeit weepy) mom, Matthew Modine as a callous politico, a sneering villain with rotten teeth, and a strangely sexy stick-figure of a henchwoman. It's all flash and no brains, but it's also a movie that exists for one simple reason: to deliver 80-some minutes of slickly crafted and frequently outlandish action sequences. And just like Frank Martin himself, the movie doesn't let up until those packages are delivered.
