Apocalypse Now
[] Buy posters from this movie
by Greg Muskewitz

"Apocalypse, stop, please!"
1 stars

All that kept going through my mind during this movie, was how much it resembled a ride at Disneyland — Pirates of the Caribbean especially.

There were staged boats, sets of boats, remote controlled boats, fire effects, gun effects, blood effects, and a whole lot of chaos. It’s all one giant-staged ride. As far as the motif of chaos goes, Apocalypse Now perfectly captures the chaotic and horrific aspects of war. I am not a big fan of war movies, generally because war is unfortunately real, and the fictionalization can be trivialized, pretentious and overdone. In cases like The Thin Red Line, and with Apocalypse Now itself, that trivialization, pretentiousness and extravagantness is all very prevalent. Similarly in both movies, the directors Coppola and Terrence Malik create a boat load of characters (possibly to utilize every capacity of the boat), and instead of building up their characters and giving them serious motivation and an identity, they are tossed out all at once onto the audience, expecting us to falsely connect with them. We are hardly given the chance to remember their names. Catharsis and empathy are a necessity in war movies because without them, it’s just a bunch of mindless death and murder. It might be argued that that’s what war is, but we need a side to identify with. As if having all the bases covered without having a connection makes any more of a difference. Apocalypse Now is not a very good cinematic vision; it is by far more designated to be an event and a “production,” full to the brim with every “movie goodie” and effect you desire, outside of any real emotion. We understand the message about war, but Coppola overdoes it, spoon feeding it to us as if we weren’t smart enough to get it on our own. He underestimates his viewers. Look at his wavering career, flailing from The Godfather series (the what-could-have-been) to Jack (the what-it-really-is), and then being one of the uncredited directors on the suddenly director-less Supernova. Coppola is a hack, a has-been, and as he has shown, he has absolutely nowhere left to go in his career aside from bouncing around as a would-be hipster producer trying to take credit for the next “find.”
