Dirty Harry

"Brutal, sensational filmmaking."
4 stars

Don Siegel packs this bitch with lots of early-seventies attitude (cheesy blaxploitation music floats and whirls over the action sequences; the main character shoots a man while finishing up his lunch), but it really is a powerful piece of work, especially viewed now, in the age of overkill. Quiet and intense, much like its main character, “Dirty Harry” gets the job done with a minimum of noise and corn. EXTREMELY refreshing.

This is a cult classic for obvious reasons—-vigilante cop talks back to his superiors and operates on a shoot-first, no-questions-whatsoever policy. Right there you have your main bases covered. Teenage boys, frustrated businessman, and aging old schoolers who ache to pull the switch on every offender, no matter what the offense, should all be able to respond to this film in a big way. These are the people who have made it a classic, and power to them.

But the discerning film fan should also find much of interest. You want action sequences? Siegel’s got ‘em in large, pleasing numbers. A nimble director, he finds just the right star in Clint Eastwood, who walks through the dry San Francisco landscapes with a loping gait, a look equal parts grimace and smirk perpetually plastered on his face. He plays Dirty Harry Callahan, a one man army who takes out most of this big city’s trash.

“Now you know why they call me Dirty Harry,” he says at one point to his rookie partner. “Any dirty job that comes along. . .” Indeed—this guy does everything, be it talking down jumpers or chasing down snipers.

“Dirty Harry,” the first film in a popular series, concentrates on the latter activity. A madman is dodging across the rooftops of sunny SF, picking off vulnerable targets. One of the smartest things about this movie is the killer, and his motives—when he promises to kill a priest or a Negro next, it’s obvious he does it not because he’s smart but because he enjoys watching the good guys get flustered. He’s a gleeful troublemaker, and his final act of malice is the film’s high point.

Going back to the wants and desires of the discerning film fan, this flick also offers up plenty of hardboiled dialogue and wise performances from an excellent cast. Look closely for John Vernon’s few scenes as the mayor, and the big black guy who gets paid to pummel the villain (one of the funniest scenes I have ever scene, in my entire life).

“Dirty Harry” delivers, period. Smart action, lots of quotable lines, and more sheer asskickin’ than you can shake a .44 Magnum at. If the idea of Clint Eastwood stepping on his victim’s freshly shot leg in order to extract a confession doesn’t get your motor going, congratulations—you’re a compassionate human being.

For the rest of us, there’s “Dirty Harry.”
