Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector

"Finally, Lionsgate puts out a genuinely terrifying film"
1 stars

Like a Pauly Shore movie with fewer teeth, comedic and otherwise, “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector” is another attempt to give a comedian with little more to offer than a vaguely annoying catchphrase a shot at big-screen stardom. I don’t know when this trend began–after all, I don’t recall Ray Jay Johnson getting himself a three-picture deal back in the day–but I can’t imagine that it could possibly cough up a film as crushingly stupid and groaningly unfunny as this one.

The vague stab at a plot involves Larry the Cable Guy–well, Larry the Health Inspector–trying to get to the bottom of a rash of food poisonings plaguing a group of five-star restaurants that are competing in an upcoming citywide cook-off. To do that, of course, requires any number of jokes revolving around bodily functions (including an extended shot of Larry riding a toilet that makes the gruesome sights of “Hostel” or “The Hills Have Eyes” look refined by comparison), scenes that appear to have been designed to shoehorn bits of Larry’s stage act into the film and endless bits in which he mocks practically everyone who isn’t a beer-bellied idiot. Sure, he tries to take the sting out of such remarks by insisting that he is just funning around but when a running joke in which he mistakes new partner Amy Butlin (Iris Bahr) for a guy is topped off with a sign saying “Butlin is a Fag,” I’m not so sure that “just kidding” quite balances the scales.

Perhaps realizing that the screen presence of its star is, at best, somewhat less than persuasive, the filmmakers have surrounded him with a supporting cast that is surprisingly strong for a film that has all the earmarks of a direct-to-video extravaganza that has inexplicably been given a shot at the big leagues–among those humiliating themselves for grocery money are Joanna Cassidy (you know, the co-star of “Blade Runner”), David Koechner (you know, the co-star of “Anchorman”), Tony Hale (you know, the co-star of the late, great “Arrested Development”), Joe Pantoliano (you know, Guido the Killer Pimp from “Risky Business”) and Jerry Mathers (you know, the Beaver). None of them score any laughs to speak of and go through their scenes with vaguely mortified expressions, as though they are afraid that people they know might actually see the film and recognize them. There is even a cameo appearance from none other than Kid Rock and yes, this is by far his most embarrassing screen appearance so far this year.

Look, I am not completely immune to the joys to be had from silly redneck humor–I have found myself laughing at the occasional “Ernest” film and will even admit a grudging fondness for the likes of “Smokey and the Bandit.” However, throughout the 85 minutes of “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector,” I think there was only one moment when I was even mildly amused–when Larry’s cell phone goes off, his ring tone was “La Cucaracha.” Beyond that (and even that gets a bit tiresome by the fourth time we hear it), the film is a toxic stew of stupidity that is so foul and rank that even the most forgiving fans of such corn-pone humor are liable to slink out of the theater at the end feeling dumber than any of the characters or jokes they have just seen.
