"A 'just right' teen movie --finally!"
3 stars

Teenagers constantly get a bad rap in the movies. Filmmakers decide to write us stereotypically and extremely superficial. Movies like “Can’t Hardly Wait” took us superficially, but instead made a fun little satire of their perception of high school seniors. In the dumbfounding new release “Varsity Blues,” an extremely horrible film, the writers don’t even differentiate between the groups of people. Instead, “teens” are portrayed in a demeaning and idiotic manner. Yet finally, in Miramax’s romantic comedy “She’s All That,” the teenagers are far less shallow and far more realistic.

Spring break is over and everyone’s headed back for school. Zack is the class president, all-star jock, Mr. Cool, and all-around good-guy; for him to say hi, or mention your name is an honor. On his first day back, his girlfriend from middle school, a Barbie-esque dress alike named Taylor, dumps him. “You didn’t actually think I’d be dating you when I left for college, did you? You did! How sweet,” says Taylor sarcastically, “But I still promise to go with you to the prom. It looks better for the king and queen to go together.” The “who” she left Zack for? Brock Hudson, whose claim to fame is two seasons on MTV’s “The Real World.”

During the day of his “loss,” Zack’s best friend Dean bets him that he couldn’t change a loser-type of girl of Dean’s choice into the prom queen. The intended victim becomes Laney Boggs: an art obsessed, big head-little body, uni-brow, and all-around loner. While buttering Laney up, Zack finds himself falling for her. With the help of his Gothic spinster of a sister Mac, Laney is refurbished into a gorgeous China-doll figure. Given the right dress, right hair and two separate eyebrows, Laney is a knock out (she really is!).

Every new movie released showcases some new youngster’s talent; we’ve got a whole new breed of Brat Packers – they’re the Generation Xers. Normally we identify and disagree with certain aspects of the teen characters, but here they’re more agreeable. They use their voices wisely. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t the “brainiac movie of the year,” but it is one of the kindest and funniest teen movies in years.

Rachel Leigh Cook, of “The House of Yes” and the drug commercial (where she smashes up the kitchen), is a knockout and is far more awesome as the diva than the clumsy goof. Freddie Prinze Jr. (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”) brings charisma to his character, although he makes some stupid moves for someone with scholarship acceptances from Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, et al. But I wish his sister would’ve taken the lawn mower to his brows too! Best of all though, would have to be Jodi Lyn O’Keefe as the acid-tongued Taylor. Try rhyming “witch” and see what you get to match up with her personality –and that’s an understatement! Only in her second role, O’Keefe is so completely realized from her debut in “Halloween: H20.” She’s extremely nasty, and very good at it!

Thank you to writer R. Lee Fleming Jr., who for once made teens look somewhat intelligent in this goofy satire. Robert Iscove makes his motion picture directorial debut with this, and choose some good material to start with. The film isn’t bursting at its seems with intellectual philosophies, but it is a charming comedic and romantic romp with the screen stars of tomorrow. And anyhow, any film ambitious enough to choreograph a song to Fat Boy Slim’s “Rockafeller Skank” stands high on my list.

Final Verdict: B
