"Not Another Kids’ CGI Movie!"
2 stars

“Open Season” has only one wildly original moment. For the first time ever, an animated animal poops. No, it doesn’t happen off screen; you get to experience the pleasure of watching the pellets leave the little guy’s behind. I won’t tell you who, where, or when because that would spoil the only surprise in this utterly unoriginal animated yawner.

There are endless aspects of “Open Season” that you will immediately recognize from other children’s’ movies from the last ten years. We meet this domesticated bear named Boog. He lives a sheltered life and is doted on constantly (just like Tiger the Cat from “Over the Hedge” and Alex the Lion from “Madagascar.”)

Boog meets up with an annoying deer named Elliot who has been shunned by his own people (just like Sid the Lemur in “Ice Age”). These two animals are naturally enemies, but circumstances make them first allies and later buddies (just like Oscar the fish and Lenny the shark in “Shark Tale”, Manny the Mastodon and Sid the Saber tooth in “Ice Age,” and Marty the Zebra and Alex the Lion in “Madagascar.”)

Together they inadvertently cause destruction and mayhem in the human world (just like the animals in “Madagascar,” “Over the Hedge,” and “The Wild.”)

The humans demand that the animals be shipped back to the wild so they are shot with tranquilizer darts and are transported to a nature preserve (just like “Madagascar”). Once in this new environment, they meet up with a wide variety of different and interesting characters, each with their own quirks and accents (just like “Robots” and “Madagascar.”)

After environmental stressors get the best of them, the two heroes have a fight and go their separate ways only to reconcile after they realize the errors of their ways (just like the protagonists in “Monsters Inc.,” “Shrek,” “Finding Nemo,” “Ice Age,” and “Madagascar”). After reconciling, the heroes organize the animals to fight a group of evil humans bent on killing the animals (just like “Chicken Run” and “Over the Hedge.”)

There is a frenzied chase that’s visually stunning (just like “Hoodwinked,” “Robots,” “Toy Story,” and “Ice Age”) and after overcoming adversity the creatures form a new utopian community, and the heroes enjoy a new-found respect from those who previously shunned them (just like “Robots,” “Madagascar,” “Chicken Little,” “Cars,” “Antz,” “A Bug’s Life,” “Shrek,” and “Shrek 2”).

Your child will probably go crazy for this imitative mash-up, but you’ll wish you had spent your hard-earned money on a good children’s book instead.
