"How to Bury a Brilliant Comedian Beneath 60lbs of Latex and 100lbs of Ego"
1 stars

You just have to wonder why, at this advanced point of his career, Eddie Murphy would have to resort to the hateful, mindless and aggressively obnoxious material found in "Norbit," his latest (and arguably worst ever ever EVER) movie. And we're talking about a guy who's made more awful movies than most actors have made movies.

This is the list of Eddie Murphy movies that I consider "bad," "very bad" or "like something out of a medieval torture palace," and please do remember that these opinions come from a guy who sincerely admires Eddie Murphy and holds a strong affection for many of his films. OK, ready? Hold your breath:

Best Defense, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Harlem Nights, Another 48 Hours, The Distinguished Gentleman, Beverly Hills Cop 3, Vampire in Brooklyn, Metro, Holy Man, Life, The Klumps, Dr. Dolittle 2, Showtime, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, I Spy, Daddy Day Care, and The Haunted Mansion

Whew. And sure, a few of those titles just might qualify as "guilty pleasures," but there's little denying that this comedian has a batting average right around that of a 41-year-old minor leaguer. When he hits a home run, it's a massive and entirely crowd-pleasing one, but when he flounders he does so in massive fashion.

And I say Norbit is worse than any of those films. Yes, even Metro.

There's a horrific whiff of desperation that runs through Norbit, as if the undeniably talented Mr. Murphy can sense his own shelf life and must therefore spend several months of his life (and millions of someone else's dollars) frantically trying to recapture some past glories. With Murphy in multiple roles, make-ups and fat suits, Norbit seems like a second cousin to The Nutty Professor -- only injected with all the most nauseating germs found in stuff like Big Momma's House and Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

Plot synopsis: A nerdy loser called Norbit is in love with a willowy former flame, but is married to a disgusting and obese creature called Rasputia. That's quite literally all there is to the plot. I could recount the various and moronic subplots that involve zoning contracts, orphanages, pimps and construction workers -- but all that stuff is just white noise waste material used to fill the gaps between Murphy's shameless barrages of ultra-schtick. Fat bitch fall down! (Funny!) Fat bitch want sex! (Hilarious!!) Fat bitch in a bikini! (Uproarious!!!) It gets really old after only five or six minutes; by the time this pestulant little zit of a movie draws to a close, congratulations: you've just survived the Bataan Death March of fat jokes.

Basically I hope you find fat jokes the pinnacle of all things hilarious, because that's all Norbit is: 90-some minutes of "Oh my lord is she fat ... and disgusting ... and evil! How very, um, funny!" If you asked a psychiatrist to take a look at Norbit before offering a diagnosis of Eddie Murphy's emotional make-up, I think the doctor would say "Yeah, um, this guy's due for a Mel Gibson style implosion some time soon." It's amazing that a guy with this much experience would jump so gleefully into a flick this filled with racism, misogyny and whatever it is you call it when someone rrrrreally hates fat people. Murphy's disdain for the overweight isn't even a subtextual thing; it lurches off the screen every six minutes, and it leaves a pretty nasty taste in one's mouth, lemme tell you.

Norbit is an astonishing misstep for a performer who really ought to know better (and believe me, the guy didn't take this gig because he's hard up for cash; forget Axel Foley, this cat's making Shrek money these days), and it's absolutely one of the worst comedies I've seen in about ten years. As directed by Brian Robbins (check his filmography yourself; I just did and it's all too painful), Norbit is also one of the cheapest-looking, haphazardly-edited, soul-deficient and humor-impaired disasters you're ever likely to come across. I really detested this movie, and my irritation is quadrupled because it comes from a comedian I've always dug and defended. A few more movies like Norbit and Eddie Murphy won't have a fanbase to kick around anymore.

And of course the thing will gross at least $75 million at the box office. Sometimes my job is so frustrating.
