"Neve's a natural boost but surprisingly this gets better & better"
4 stars

"Three to Tango" is a total screwball comedy, with its predictable formulaic approach to a misunderstanding that escalates further and further until the person at the center of the misunderstanding goes along with it because it's gone on too far as it is.

The person who's misunderstood is Oscar Novak (Matthew Perry), and the misunderstanding is that he's gay. The assumption is made by Charles Newman (Dylan McDermott), a creepy business tycoon. Oscar and his partner Peter Steinberg (Oliver Platt), who is gay, are architects in competition for $90 million to preserve an old historical Chicago building for Newman's firm. Charles, who's married, is also very jealous of his mistress, Amy Post (Neve Campbell), and upon mistaking Oscar as gay, hires him to spy on Amy. After an accident-ridden evening, the two click quickly, but when Charles tells Amy that Oscar is gay, the best they can do is become good girlfriends, sharing a lot of inside information (like Amy's lesbian experience with a Brazilian woman while in college).

Neve's Amy is a free-spirited, cute and perky glass artist. Campbell has a charming onscreen presence, and with a track record as good as hers (with the exception of "The Craft"), I usually know I'm in for a good show with her. Campbell has made some very auspicious career choices, perfectly expanding her screen horizon. She's avoided typecasting herself -- even though she will reprise her role of Sidney Prescott as the reigning Scream Queen in "Scream 3" -- and has done an excellent job in selecting a wide range of screen personas. Perry is very funny also, as a slight variation on his "Friends" character Chandler, but is more than a likable screen presence.

"Three to Tango" was a big surprise for me -- I realize that it's nothing more than a Hollywood piece of fluff, but the movie was outlandishly and hilariously funny. It in no way matches up to, say, "There's Something About Mary," but what the two films have in common is that they're both consistently funny, and the humor keeps on building.

But aside from being the laugh riot it is, "Three to Tango" is also a heartwarming romance and a definite audience pleaser.
"Three to Tango" is nowhere near an Oscar-quality movie, but in the comedic sense, it was one of the funniest and most fulfilling comedies of the year for me.

It works because of a mixture of well-meshed screen chemistry between Campbell and Perry, funny performances by all, a volcanically funny (yet predictable) script by Rodney Vaccaro and Aline B. McKenna, and a good start for debut director Damon Santostefano.
