"Shawn Edwards and Ben Lyons Are Legendary Morons"
1 stars

Richard Mathesonís tale about the last man on earth has been through a tortured history in trying to get to the big screen under its actual name. For years at the height of his popularity, Arnold Schwarzenegger was supposed to take on the role for directors as varied as James Cameron and Ridley Scott. A ballooning budget jettisoned the project more than once and has been pretty much sitting in the wet dream pile of studio tentpole ideas. Mathesonís tale offered the sort of intriguing questions about humanityís survival that populated the late 60s and early 70s in films like Planet of the Apes and Loganís Run. In fact, it was already made twice Ė once in 1964 with Vincent Price as The Last Man On Earth and the go-to ham for science fiction in this era, Charlton Heston as The Omega Man. One of the great eternal questions that man will always struggle with, particularly after seeing 2007ís I Am Legend, is how you wait for your opportunity to make your big bucks off this project, cast one of the biggest box office stars in the world and then hand it off to a director like Francis Lawrence, whose freshman effort (Constantine) remains as poorly directed a comic book adaptation youíll find and whose sophomore effort canít even stand up to the lame 30 Days of Night.

In a prologue with an inexplicable cameo by Emma Thompson, we learn that she was part of a team who believed they had cured cancer only to watch 93% of the population die off and form a vampiric mutation that fed off another 6.99%. Will Smith plays the 0.01%, Robert Neville, another military scientist who now speeds through the streets of a barren Times Square and hunts for loose wild life. Despite having a high-powered rifle, heís about the worst shot ever having hit little more than a mannequin for the length of his journey. Nevertheless heís survived for nearly three years (itís now 2012) with his trusty German Shepherd in a fully stocked apartment with unspoiled nourishment, exercise equipment (to show off how hard Smith worked out for the role) and a medical lab in the basement where he works night and day on a cure for the virus.

Speaking of the night, Robert must close up shop while the haunting shrieks of the infected echo through the streets. (And why is he sleeping in the bathtub?) For all the lengths that Matheson went to describe the vampiric qualities of ultraviolet aversion and blood lust, I Am Legend canít even solve the basic question of how these thousands of creatures have survived for so long with seemingly one source of hemoglobin left in the city whom they canít even find. Itís one of the many inconsistencies to be found in Mark Protosevich & Akiva Goldsmanís screenplay like why Robert assumes the creatures are losing their humanistic desire for survival only to see them become more efficient trappers than he is and at least one alpha vampire keeping infected dogs on a leash. Nowhere is the correlation made between the two species of the need to prey on another to stay alive and that weíre all not so different at the end of the day.

All part of why I Am Legend is ultimately a wasteful exercise from the top on down. Francis Lawrenceís direction makes for less of a cautionary tale about science and more of one of hiring helmers who canít even find the basic blueprint for storytelling let alone finding the obvious themes in the blazing daylight. Heís a creature himself, scowering in the dark for the scraps necessary to fill 95 minutes of a one-man show with an occasional set piece that is basically the remnants of far better executed sequences in B-movie horror. Establishing Robertís isolation through special effects and production design is the easy part. Maintaining it so that the audience feels it too is a a task that Lawrence is clearly unqualified for. Instead of terrifying us from the get-go with all the panic and evacuation, Lawrence and editor Wayne Wahrman sprinkle it throughout (in probably some bit of Day For Night irony that was funny to the two of them) as dream sequences meant to wake us up with noise displacing the far eerier quiet thatís supposed to be weighing on Robertís psyche.

When Robert isnít hunting, hiding or playing doctor he must find someway to pass the time and it becomes rather embarrassing to watch Smith try to pull off Tom Hanksí Cast Away act by conversing with inanimate objects, namely mannequins in a video store and doubly so when reenacting an entire scene from Shrek in such a robotic fashion that it wouldnít put kids to sleep, but keep them in wide-eyed amazement at what a bad actor he can be sometimes. Oh, speaking of children (the screenwriterís delight when his imagination runs out) one shows up with a protector (Alice Braga) an hour in to breathe some humanity into Robert and instead sucks whatever shred of life the film had left in it. Their rumination on belief in God is a half-cocked bridge to one of the weakest climactic standoffs in film history, populated by a continuation of some of the worst special effects to ever be rendered for a nine-figure budget. Even if the torn-up bridges donít have you thinking Idiocracy as serious sci-fi, the cartoonish ďdark seekersĒ will have you clamoring for the menacing simplicity of the smoke monster from Lost.

28 Weeks Later was far more successful this year covering much of the same ground that I Am Legend believes its breaking ground in. Goldsman and Protosevich remove the Twilight Zone-esque epilogue that explains Mathesonís title and instead turns it into a heroic bit of ego trip to a moviestar whose own history will have done more for box office than cinema. I donít know how Ron Howard made two good movies (A Beautiful Mind & Cinderella Man) from his work, but this is clearly the Akiva Goldsman once synonymous with Lost In Space and the Schumacher Batmans. Clearly Smith has some affinity for him though, having also sloppily adapted Asimovís I, Robot and is attached as a polisher on his Hancock next summer. Itís easy to say that like the apocalypse itself and the blood suckers who inhabit it, I Am Legend simply sucks but thatís putting it a little too mildly when the last man on earth is liable to skip over it in favor of I Am Sam.
