Blade |
by Ryan Arthur
"You're not really undead, Wesley. It's acting, man."

Know what I hate?I hate how every fight scene seems to now have techno music blaring in the background. It's every bit as annoying as it was in Mortal Kombat.
But yet, there's Wesley Snipes as Blade, kicking vampire ass and slicing heads off, all the while moving to the electric groove. I've got nothing against techno, but it's getting old.
That said, Blade doesn't suck (pun intended). It's a comic book movie, which should be held under different standards anyway. It's not a bad comic book movie, either. It's not Batman, but it's not Batman & Robin, either.
Snipes doesn't do it for me, here. He's a little too wooden. I know he's trying to be a badass, but come on. Enough with the Terminator with fangs bit. He's too stoic, even when he's filled with rage and fighting everyone off, he seems almost detached from it all. Ditto Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, Blade's mentor. He's not too stoic, just too gruff. It's as if each actor is given one trait and that's the extent of the characterization that they use ("OK, Wesley, you're a badass, so don't show emotion. Like Arnold, only blacker. Good. Kris, don't bathe for the entire shoot. Perfect."). N'Bushe Wright has no chemistry with Snipes.
Steven Dorff, however, is right cool as the head vampire. He's not completely over the top as the villain, and he's not so subtle that you don't think he's creepy.
Decent effects and impressive martial arts work, though Snipes is no Jackie Chan. And as a comic book movie, it's fairly faithful to its source material. It won't kill you to see it.
