"My Word, Not My Bond"
3 stars

“There’s something horribly efficient about you,” whispers a woman to her traveling companion, James Bond, and for the first time in this enduring superspy franchise, she’d be right.

In Quantum of Solace, Bond’s 22nd outing, Her Majesty’s secret agent (Daniel Craig) has some unfinished business remaining from Casino Royale, and so he hits the ground running – or speeding, I should say, away from bad guys in fast cars with endless ammo. Not long after, the man in his trunk (Jesper Christensen, from the very beginning and very end of Royale) reveals, to dramatic effect, that this criminal outfit of his has people everywhere, and so M (Judi Dench) sets Bond on the trail of environmentalist Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric, adequately smug) in order to dig up more about this so-called Quantum organization – with any and all desires for revenge from the death of his girlfriend theoretically kept in check…

From there on out, it’s a regular game of ‘See James Run’: London, Haiti, Bolivia, Austria, Italy – the man’s passports have passports, he flies so far so fast. Don’t get me wrong, he still sips a martini (even if he never formally orders it), and he still beds at least one of his two female counterparts: either the pretty-pouty Camille (Olga Kurylenko), as driven by vengeance as Bond is, or the pretty-prim MI6 Agent Fields (Gemma Arterton), whose first name is a secret perhaps best saved for the end credits.

The man has globe-trotting and girl-tempting down pat, to be sure, but again, “horribly efficient” is the name of the game here. Often mistaking ‘busy’ for ‘exciting’, director Marc Forster has no shortage of action but also no experience, a concern that only grows increasingly apparent as purported thrills die the death of a million cuts in this car chase or that boat chase (perhaps two credited editors are one too many). A mid-point opera shoot-out merits a bit more interest, but a foot-based pursuit can’t measure up to a similar sequence in The Bourne Ultimatum, and the climactic confrontation happens to take place in the world’s most conveniently flammable hotel. The shortest entry to date, it’s an hour and forty minutes that admittedly don’t let up, but after a while, Bond’s sneakiest villain might be apathy towards all the sound and fury.

It’s not Craig’s fault; he brings the same inner turmoil and aggressive volatility to the role that he had in Royale, but in a moment here or there – like the way in which he swiftly, smartly dispatches a henchman on a motorcycle, or the manner with which he upgrades his hotel accommodations – he makes one ache for the suaveness that made one actually want to be Bond.

The fact that the end of the film suggests that he’s ready to restrain some of his rough, gruff demeanor offers to me at least the very slightest solace as to where the franchise might continue from here. For now, though, I’m afraid that we’re left with run-and-gun and just not much fun.
