Superstar (1999)

"Dumb, but it may make you giggle a bit."
2 stars

There have been a spate of movies of late (Scary Movie, Big Momma's House etc) that have not quite made the grade in the humour stakes, and while Superstar isn't the funniest film of the year, it certainly is of a slightly higher calibre than some of its predecessors.

Young, Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher (Shannon) has a dream - to kiss someone in that Hollywood, lip-smacking, earth shattering way and decides the way to achieve this is to become just like the people she admires in the movies. When the opportunity arises to enter Catholic Teen Magazine's Anti Venereal Disease Talent Quest, Mary Katherine's dream is within her grasp as the first prize is the chance to go to Hollywood and be an extra in a movie with positive moral values.

So begins a rigorous training schedule with fellow special ed classmates, under the tutelage of ex showgirl grandmother (Johns), and in direct competition with high school rival, Evian (Hendrix) for the affections of most popular boy at school, Sky (Ferrell).

Shannon had been playing with the character of Mary Katharine Gallagher since her days at NYU, but finally hit on the material she needed in working with Koren on Saturday Night Live in 1995, which received a great response from the audience. And one can understand why - Shannon's unabashed, highly energised, very physical performance is to be commmended. She skirts on the edge of silliness on occassion, but stays just on the right side of funny. Her co star Ferrell similarly walks this fine line (although he tends to tip into what I would call "Leslie Nielson" mode - the "Naked Gun" humour I personally find mostly unamusing) but also has his moments.

Laybourne as Helen, Mary Katharine's new best friend, is the show stealer in her great rendition of the dorky, awkward, braces wearing adolescent. Hendrix is also quite strong, although she seems to have developed her character by borrowing extensively from movies such as "Jaw Breaker", "Clueless" and "Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion".

Script/dialogue wise, "Superstar" still has a very much 'sketch' comedy feel to it, which helps the film's pace but ultimately, the plot itself is thin and doesn't have anywhere much to go. The film essentially lacks the intelligent humour of something like "Romy & Michelle...", going far too often for the cheap laughs and missing opportunities to play out the stereotyped characters in a clever way.
