Story of Us, The

"Dear god help me--I cried at the end."
3 stars

I hope this won't rob me of my Cyinc status. I'm humiliated to be writing this. I went to the video store and followed my normal rule: If I haven't seen it, rent it, and I always check the new ones first. Please forgive me, I actually found myself LIKING some of it, even though the flaws are as clear as day. Somebody shoot me.

WHY am I cursed to be such a movie whore? I watched this lightweight piffle, actually trying not to like it. (Which is a pretty fucked up concept for a movie lover.) Yes, it's unrealistic and lightweight fluff. Yes, it only scratches the surface of marital problems, and just glances over truths that should perhaps be more explored. But what I boiled it all down to was this: Two actors I really like were playing a married couple on the rocks. Since they're actors I like, I naturally wanted them to get back together. Both of them perform quite well, amidst a lot of unnecessary junk. There's easily a handful of scenes that I enjoyed seeing, and I was into watching Willis and Pfeiffer work together.

I think the problem everyone seems to have with this movie is that of its intention. I don't think it's meant to a some huge symbolic metaphor for all marriages. I think it's just a short and ocassionally entertaining depiction of THIS particular couple. Hey, it's the kind of movie that's easy to hate: the character development is certainly lacking, the Eric Clapton sing is just a bit overdone, the flashback technique is way overdone, the subplots are completely arbitrary, and the ending is just a little too tight and sweet.

Having said all that, Michelle Pfeiffer gets to do this long, rambling speech at the end that honestly had me in tears. It was an amazing scene in a mediocre movie, and it raised the whole thing one star in my book. To be honest, the scene probably would have been just as good without the 90 minutes that preceded it, but oh well. Also, I was impressed by Willis' few scenes of quiet sadness. Anyway, The Story of Us is just another studio mess that probably deserves its status as a disappointment. It certainly could have been 10 times better, but I found it worth a rental.

Hell, if I can recommend a horror movie just for the gore or a comedy just for a few raunchy lines, I can certainly recommend this piffle just on the merit of the actors. Guess I'm just a big softie for these two, because if it had starred Michael Douglas and Rene Russo, I'd still be vomiting.
