Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, The

"A Disturbing New Vision from the New Master of Horror"
4 stars

Finally, a Sesame Street film that takes real chances. From the opening, ultra-violent montage, to the edgier-than-thou straight razor scene, straight through to the dynamite, wake-up-call-to-America ending, TAEiG is a landmark event in film, and the herald of a new age for the Children's Television Workshop.

Okay, so maybe it isn't as horrific as all that, and maybe it is a letdown that they cut the much-anticipated battle between Ernie and Chucky, but The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland really is a very good puppet-based film. I realize that sounds like a back-handed compliment, but I'm a big fan of puppets...SO BACK THE HELL OFF!!!

The film works because it is entertaining for its target audience (five year olds), but also manages to have the occasional treat for the parents. This is important.

You see, parents know that if they don't take their kids to the films THEY want to see, the little bastards will start crying and leaping about and urinating on things. So it's nice when the material has at least something to keep the old folks from being too bored. The kids get their Elmo, the parents get a few well-crafted in-jokes, and the sofa remains unsoiled. Everybody wins.

One thing I really like about this film was that the villain was legitimately scary for kids. I heard some parents complaining that he was too scary for little children. Ridiculous. Some of my favorite Disney moments involved villains that gave me nightmares...I'm glad that's making a comeback.

The songs are fair, and work in the context of the film, though not nearly as successfully as in the South Park flick - but my brother went crazy when I took my little nephew to see THAT. Rest assured, parents, the Elmo film is entertaining, well-made, and completely wiener-free.

Anyway, the bottom line is that you are going to see this film, you'll have little choice in the matter. So go, and you'll probably have a fairly good time. Now back to the artifice.

Far more polished than Blair Witch, but no less terrifying. Left in the able hands of his successors, Henson's world has taken a remarkable turn toward the macabre. Truly chilling.
