Beautiful (2000)

"Damn girl...you sure is UGLY!!!!"
1 stars

Sign number 47 that you are watching a bad movie: when you stop caring about the characters in a weepy dramedy and keep noticing the Pepsi cans.

I'm not kidding. There are Pepsi cans all over the place in "Beautiful." A supermarket scene has all of the Pepsi products IN FOCUS and everything else at a blur. Pepsi cans littered all over Minnie Driver's apartment. In the hotel room. I even think a Pepsi truck drives by in one shot. This would all seem to be quite weird as director Sally Field seems to be doing a lot of product placement throughout the film (and it's not just Pepsi Products), but then there's little cupcake Hallie Kate Eisenberg who in real life does the "Pepsi Girl" ad. Ad Nauseum is more like it.

I've always admired Sally Field as an actress. Now it's time to go back to it. "Beautiful" is a trainwreck of a film. This is another tired entry in a year of films where half of them don't even know what they want to be about. This one doesn't even have a clue, let alone not even a desire to look for one.

Minnie Driver is Mona, a woman from Illinois who spends her entire life wanting to become Miss America Miss, a reason unknown to all of us. She has, or uses, a best friend (Joey Lauren Adams) who gets wrongfully thrown in jail for some drug crime that she didn't commit (the movie doesn't even follow up on this, in the end they just let her go). There's also an angry news woman who is after Mona for her wrongdoings. And then there's Mona's parents, he a molestor, she a typical housewife, that don't go anywhere in the story but to just look even WORSE than Mona does, her being bad enough already.

Big twist here: since beauty pagents can't be mothers, Mona gives her child to Ruby and then the kid, Vanessa (Eisenberg) finds out on her own. Meanwhile, the movie presses on to Mona's dumbness in pagents, a bitter newswoman, her parents watching on TV, her best friend in jail, and so on...

The entire cast is atrocious. Driver is alternates from happy, teary eyed, pissed off, vengeful, bitter and confused so many times that if the pagent was about split personalities, she would win the crown for sure. Joey Lauren Adams doesn't have much to work with here, the latter half of the film has her sitting in a jail room watching Mona on TV. Leslie Stefanson, the daughter of "The General's Daughter," is a pretty and talented actress, but has nothing to work with here. Even the young Mona, in pointless early scenes showing her fascination with pagents, doesn't have much to do. And Hallie Kate Eisenberg, while cute, doesn't have a shred of acting ability in her Pepsi-endorsed body.

I don't know what Sally Field was thinking. This is the kind of material that studios normally reject and schools teach you NOT to write; but since Sally Field is such an accomplished actress, they think that's an excuse. No.
