"Disney Uses Gremlins To Create The Funniest Character of the Year"
4 stars

In their continued efforts to go Looney Tunes with their animated offerings, Disney now brings us the newly created black sheep of their cinematic family in Stitch. He is tiny, blue, kinda looks like an animal and looks even more like he should be the wacky songbird sidekick. But’s he’s not. Stitch is an alien. Not just any alien, but a genetically created one designed solely to be a monster and programmed for destruction. He’s also the funniest character you are likely to see created in any film all year.

Stitch comes from Planet Turo at the hands of a four-eyed mad scientist who has illegally dabbled in genetics with this new creation. Scheduled for destruction, the blue four-armed creature escapes in a rocketship and crash lands in Hawaii. Local youngster Lilo (LEE-lo) isn’t a favorite among her peers and under the not-so-watchful eye of her guardian big sister, Nani (Tia Carrere), is creative but somewhat misbehaved to the point of hysterically beating up her classmates when they disagree with her. Recently assigned social worker, the hulking Cobra Bubbles (Ving Rhames) plans to keep an eye on their progress together.

Stitch, a volatile little bugger himself with the strength of an army of ants, is in fact like Bruce Willis in Unbreakable
or Ricardo Montalban’s pen in The Naked Gun, impervious to everything except water. When he winds up in an animal shelter and pursued by his creator and one-eyed assistant, Stitch sucks in his two extra arms and pretends to be a dog with Lilo taking an instant liking to him. After some initial biting and furniture smashing, Lilo begins to tame Stitch with a little help from the music of the King, setting up one of the film’s highlight comic sequences where the alien takes to singing and dancing.

This middle section of the film with the initial introduction of the two titular characters leads to about 20 minutes of solid, uninterrupted bursts of tremendous laughter. There may not be anything highbrow about aliens and kids destroying anything that comes into their path, but when presented quickly and unexpected in both the back-and-foreground, it can be raised to an art form. Several sections of Lilo & Stitch aspire to this level of humor where it never fails and, surprisingly, never gets old.

Lilo & Stitch probably owes as much to Joe Dante’s Gremlins than anything else. Stitch is virtually a genetic molding of Gizmo the Mogwai and his after-midnight munching green alter-ego. He likes to chomp on things, cause all kinds of mischief and destruction and even sounds like Howie Mandel is providing his vocal stylings. Also keep an eye out for Stitch’s use of a chainsaw and the appearance of a Swiss Army-like product that looks a lot like Hoyt Axton’s Bathroom Buddy.

Where some parents may wince at the depiction of hostile brattiness and unchecked vandalism, there’s also a nice heart at the center of this mayhem where families are concerned. Nani is trying her best to raise Lilo and has a nice scene where she would rather be considered a great sister than a bad mother. Stitch also finds himself craving the belonging of a family unit in the sci-fi tradition of films like A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Short Circuit and it’s a message that pays off several times between both relationships.

Stitch’s antics immediately recall the days of Warner Bros. and Mel Blanc and hardly seem suited for the sensibilities of the more fanciful, homespun musical adventures of Walt Disney. But give first-time animation directors Dean Deblois and Chris Sanders a big pat on the back for improving upon the goofy elements that Disney experimented with in The Emperor’s New Groove just a few years back. The movie as a whole, may not go down in the canon of classic Disney treatments, but if there’s any truth in advertising left in the entertainment business, Stitch is an absolute classic character. He may just be another in a wide range of Disney’s leading women, men and animals, but it’s a family he deserves to belong to nevertheless.
