With their first film, [i]Half-Nelson[/i], a trenchant, cliché-free character study of a high-school teacher struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck immediately became filmmakers to watch. Ryan Gosling received a well-deserved Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Boden and Fleck avoided the dreaded “sophomore slump” with this second effort, [i]Sugar[/i], a character study centered on a Dominican baseball player. [i]Sugar[/i] received a limited, if well regarded, release.
