Carrie (1976)

"The 'Facts Of Life' gone Telekinetic"
2 stars

1976's "Carrie" was the beginning of the long line of Stephen King novels brought to film. Sissy Spacek was nominatd for an Oscar for her portrayal of the shy, repressed teenager who learns that she has the power to control things with her mind. A fine weapon when you are the laughing stock of the school.

I had NEVER seen Brian De Palma's Carrie before and just recently decided that it was time I rent it already and check out what all the past praise was about. I was hardly impressed.

Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is a shy, uncertain teenager who cannot seem to fit in with anyone at school. Her quietness and lack of social skills make her the ultimate target. As the film begins, we get a nice little soft core porn scene of Carrie taking a shower after gym class. Lots of nude chicks walking around. (Not bad.) However, the scene is a bit unnecessary and you have to wonder just why would such a repressed girl wash her herself with such justo. This scene sets up the moment when Carrie gets her first period. (A little late for a senior you'd think!) She gets hysterical and goes screaming to the other girls in the gym to help her. But the girls are bullies and they tease her and laugh like morons. Then they start throwing pads and tampons at her. The gym teacher (Betty Buckley) gets all huffy about the teasing that poor Carrie suffers and decides to make all the girls suffer through a one hour gym workout session (complete with horrific seventies music.)

The bullies who consist of Chris,(Nancy Allen) Sue,(Amy Irving) and a couple others plot revenge on Carrie for making them go through an hour of workout hell. All the while, Carrie is dealing with a religious crazed mother,(Piper Laurie) at home. Somehow, during all this, she discovers that she can break things and move things with her mind. (Seems to me like she should've known about having such a power earlier in her life, but it's suddenly needed now so, lucky for her!) All the while Mother screams a lot over Carrie's sinful actions but Carrie is determined to fit in at school.

A fellow conspirator Tommy,(William Katt) asks her to the prom by way of a coaxing from Tommy's girlfriend Sue. (But Sue doesn't get around to telling Tommy what they are going to do to Carrie! If he's doing it for a joke, shouldn't they tell him?) Meanwhile Chris and her boyfriend Billy,(John Travolta) kill some pigs and fill a little bucket up with blood to pour onto Carrie on the night of the prom. So she goes to Prom and is tricked into being voted the Queen of the Prom. (Doesn't Carrie for one moment think that this is too good to be true? I mean I would seriuosly be doubting the motives of my one-time enemies at that moment!) But the prom Queen goes onstage and gets all mucked up in one long, slow motion, crappy scene where the pigs blood pours out all over her.

Here is where Carrie goes apeshit. However, I was VERY disapointed in the hideously filmed gym distruction scene. Alot of split screen camera work distracted me from viewing the cheap ass effects. Then there was the dreary slow motion moments that only slowed any kind of suspense that could have arisen. Then all the teens running around didn't help cause I couldn't tell who was getting killed. I mean one girl actually gets killed by a spray of water from a fire hose? Whoa scarey! Then as Carrie leaves the gym, Chris and Billy try to run her over but she flips their car and kills them. (Whatever man!) Then she heads home and takes another bath so we get another look at her body and then her mother comes out and reveals the reason for her disgust in Carrie. Pent up sexual revelations come out at this scene and are oddly out of place. Carrie's mom attacks her and then the two have it out in the kitchen. Blah Blah Blah.....

That's bascially it. The movie was poorly conceived and I couldn't help but get distracted from the heart of the story by the crappy supporting cast and sloppy dialogue. I could get into the dramatic scenes because they just didn't work all that well. Basically, the biggest gripe I got is with the film's premise. It seemed strange that Carrie would want to take up with fellow classmates and socialize when she NEVER had before. Living in an environment with her nutty Mother all her life would most likely would have made Carrie think exactly like her mother. (That the world is a sinful place and one must not move about in it.) Or at least be terrified to. One guy asks her to the prom and she suddenly gets all confident. Putting on makeup and curling her hair seems way too out of place. After a lifetime of repression Carrie would have needed more then a gym teacher telling her that she was pretty to get the guts to go to the prom.

The film's highlight was Sissy Spacek as Carrie. She really creates an empithetic character and I wished that I could have gotten more scenes of her dealings with the world, her new found power and her tortured mother, but instead we are handed the lame 'Girl gets back at the bullies for picking on her' theme.
I suppose if director De Palma would have left out the telekinetic crap, the movie could have worked better. I think it would have been more effective if Carrie just went nuts and physically killed her tormentors with a gun or something.

In Carrie, the weakest point for me was trying to understand the catalyst for the whole plot of revenge on Carrie. A bunch of girls got in trouble for throwing tampons at her and they almost loose the chance to go to the prom?! I never knew a gym teacher had the authority to make such a ruling. Oh....Ok...?

I cannot believe how annoying a few words could be in a film. "They're All Gonna Laugh at You." Looped 100 times! *1/2 Stars
