General's Daughter, The

"Gritty and just good."
4 stars

“The General’s Daughter” is much more of a thriller! It’s written better, directed better, acted better, and is a much better put together film. The child in this movie isn’t a 10-year-old like “Arlington Road,” but a thirtysomething captain in the army.

“The General’s Daughter” is much heavier than the latter film, and is a mystery/thriller surrounding the murder/rape of Captain Elizabeth Campbell (Leslie Stefanson) –daughter of Ltc. Gen. Joe Campbell (James Cromwell). Warrant officer Paul Brenner (John Travolta) is brought in to investigate the case, and keep it hush-hush for the next 36 hours before the media will be allowed to interfere. Also brought onto the case is rape counselor Sarah Sunhill (Madeleine Stowe). As the two further investigate the fine-tuned, scholarly, and extremely physically fit captain, the more dirt they find on her. There’s a lot more I don’t want to reveal about this film, but it won’t hurt to find out that Elizabeth Campbell turns out to be kinkier than the characters from “Eight Millimeter.”

At times, “The General’s Daughter” is very politically centered –not just the political aspect of the characters, but the themes the movie takes on. Another heavy issue dealt with here is feminism and the place of women in the military. Not to mention this is done considerably better than “G.I. Jane.”

The film is directed by Simon West, who brought us the pumped-up action blockbuster “Con Air,” and although the action isn’t as prevalent here, he knows how to make adept use of the audience. The script was adapted from the novel by screenwriters Christopher Bertolini, and the arrogant William Goldman. The script was well thought out, and stayed consistently a step ahead of us. The cast was also rock solid! Travolta’s as good as ever, and although the character played by Madeleine Stowe was a little misused, she also bonded the movie into the powerful mouthpiece it was designed for. Clarence Williams III was more powerful in his venerable performance as Joe Campbell’s assistant than anything else before! Aside from the action, mystery and drama, “The General’s Daughter” also had an odd sense of humor, which didn’t detract from the film at all. Also check out the music by Carter Burwell. A definite must-see for the summer!

Final Verdict: B+
