Death Wish worked because of its original subject and character development, and also because it was a film that everyone could relate to in society. That is not the case with Death Wish II, which happens to be a complete opposite of the original.Ok, Paul Kersey is back, this time in LA, after his devastating path of vigilante violence in New York, he and his daughter Carol (Robin Sherwood) want to escape the dark past and move to a more peaceful life, along with Kerseyís new girl Geri Nichols (Jill Ireland). But, alas, a bunch of muggers rape and kill his daughter, and Kersey this time was witness to what happened, and goes off again as the fascist vigilante, this time LOOKING for the thugs that killed his daughter.
"The Sequel Sin: Repeating the Formula. Results: Shit"
Gosh this film was fucking awful. It shoots itself in the foot when it includes this time Paul going after the thugs that killed his daughter, making it predictable as hell, and an excuse to show some violence, shots being fired, and a car exploding. It also brings forceful emotional manipulation when his daughter is killed, and the mindless rape scenes are just manipulative bullshit from the start. Ok, in simpler words, itís bland, devoid of suspense, full of mindless violence and wooden acting. Worse it destroys the original idea of the first one turning it into a formulaic ride that is as cringeful as your five year old brother. And thatís not counting the awful, earsplitting shitstorm that is the musical score, courtesy of Jimmy Page. Ok, heís a guitar god, and I admire him for his Led Zeppellin days, but for Godís sake Jimmy, stay away from composing film scores, you suck at it. Itís the worst score Iíve heard in my life.
No, no, thatís not the worst. The WORST of it all was the necessity of making a sequel. Seriously, WAS IT FUCKING NECESSARY TO MAKE THIS FILM? Why do it? Why destroy the characterís lives even more with bullshit like this? Fucking studio excecutives, trying to cash on the success on the first one, they dare throw us this turd. Bronson is not Paul Kersey here; heís just acting a cartoon sketch of Paul Kersey. Nothing new is brought to his character, much less to the other characters. Itís just flat all over. Director Michael Winner shoots himself in the foot; he had no idea what the fuck he was doing. He was like: Ok, 8 years since I did Death Wish, mmm, how did I do it? Oh I remember. Lets do a scene like this, then like thatÖ. I think thatís how I did it, but fuck it, letís print it anyways.ĒIn the end, this film is a waste of your time, fans of the first one will be better off forgetting that thereís a sequel to this movie, or should I say 4, yes 4, dreadful sequels. This film completely betrays the idea of the first one and I just wanna kill whoever approved this garbage. Avoid.
