Godfather Part 2, The

"The only thing you can fault it for is for the legions of sequels"
5 stars

Because of this, we were forced to deal with Major League 2. It was the first movie to truly expand upon its predecessor, and it won several Oscars. It gave sequels a raison d'etre. But we can't blame it for that.

The Godfather was brilliant, perfect, wonderful, awe-inspiring. It ended so masterfully, just as the book did, and it left no loose ends. I'm sure that when plans for a sequel were announced, people were about as incredulous as they were when they announced "Batman and Robin". It must have seemed so unnecessary. But it wasn't. It met the expectations of "The Godfather", and expanded upon it.

Coppola was offered the chance to do the sequel, and he took it, because he saw in it an opportunity: to destroy Michael Corleone. This movie shows us the destruction of a soul that was already on shaky ground to begin with, and it counter-balances this destruction with the rise to power of his father, played by Robert De Niro in his first big role since the career-maker he made in "Mean Streets". Showing the dedication that would become his trademark, he spent time in Sicily to learn the dialect of the people there, and his performance as young Marlon Brando is nothing short of masterful. It was a risky move, playing a younger version of a role that was basically defined by Brando, the master of acting, but De Niro pulls it off, playing a quiet ferociousness that would eventually lead to the power that we saw in The Godfather.

And Pacino? Don't even start. The guy is a king. Some of his scenes, particularily the scene where he meets with Frankie Five Angels, show why this guy is a legend and why we allow him to make movies like "Scent of A Woman". Anybody else would have been killed after that one.

The performances all-around are brilliant. Duvall, Strasberg, Gazzo, Cazale, Diane Keaton - they embody their roles, and they live them, as well. No other roles have been so all-encompassing. These actors are DEFINED by these roles. This was Strasberg's film debut, playing Hyman Roth. He taught Pacino how to act. The guy's a demon. Cazale starred in the first two Godfathers, The Conversation, and the Deer Hunter, and then he died. The man's legacy is unmeasurable. Diane Keaton - well, she went on to make Annie Hall. It doesn't touch what she did here.

This movie is a Godsend. Worship it.

This movie is like Hamlet to the original's Macbeth. Two very different movies, two equally powerful tragedies. These two movies make the world go 'round.
