"The rise of a legend"
5 stars

In 1975, amidst negative publicity and with eminent expectations of critical and commercial disaster, Universal Studios rolled the dice and released Jaws; a film directed by a then-unknown director called Steven Spielberg about some man-eating shark terrorizing a beach in Florida, little knowing that it would become one of the greatest films ever made and the definitive blueprint for latter day “summer movies” to come.

On the island of Amity Beach, Florida, a college girl is eaten by a Great White Shark, or at least that’s what it looks like when Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) is given at first the medical report. But then, it’s reversed since it seems that it would affect business during the summer season which is pretty much due in a couple of days. After another killing, Brody finally gets help from Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), an shark scientist and observer whom immediately tells Brody that this was the work of a Great White Shark, but it isn’t until the shark strikes a third time during the 4th of July festivities that finally the city council headed by greedy mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) approves for Brody, Hooper, and renowned shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) to go out and kill the shark… so long as the shark doesn’t kill them first.

Everyone knows the back story of this film: an impending actor’s strike, an over-excess of ambition and naïveté by the director and producers, a glitch-ridden mechanical shark called Bruce, and an over-budget of 10 million (a shitload of money by 1975 standards), everything was tagged as a moviemaking disaster… That is until director Steven Spielberg and the late great editor Verna Fields, aware of the shit that Bruce the fucked-up mechanical shark did for the realism of the film, decided to use an old Hitchcockian plot device: leave the shark unseen until halfway through the film when the final battle between the three men and the shark takes place. Thanks to this, by leaving the shark unseen and having Bill Butler’s camera take the point of view of the shark, and accompanied by John Williams’s masterful heart-pounding score whenever it approaches a would-be victim, it created a powerful source of fear not because of what the camera sees, but because of what you can’t see. That’s the true power of Jaws, and that’s what makes this film so fucking cool since its one of the most effective uses of suspense that gives out some of the most memorable and horrific scenes ever. No wonder this film made people afraid of the water.

And not only that, the storyline isn’t too shabby either since the screenplay by Carl Gottlieb Peter Benchley (who wrote it from his book) and several uncredited writers don’t forget about the characters either, giving them a three-dimensional look as human beings rather than plot devices for killing the shark. The most obviously memorable is Quint when he starts talking about his dark past, and gives you a sense or aura of a death-wish, which ultimately is the driving force behind Quint and his madness; all in all an impressive piece of work by Spielberg and company.

The acting is perfect as Roy Scheider gives quite turn as Chief Brody, as well as Richard Dreyfuss as Hooper. Robert Shaw though, gives the best performance of the three since he manages to show complexity in his character far deeper than one would’ve imagined.

In the end, this is certifiable classic, and one of the most original and suspenseful films ever made. This film also went on to prove that no matter how many imitators arise (JAWS 2, 3, 4, Deep Blue Sea, are you listening, you fuckers?) none will ever equal the impact of the original. Spielberg’s career was now in full-swing and was underway to make some of the best films that this world had ever seen. 5-5
