"Each bite registers the same as the last."

Soft Fruit. Likable melodrama about a (mostly obese) family of Australians reunited to be with their mother in her last stages of cancer. When the movie’s title showed up on the critics’ upcoming schedule of releases, one posited from the title that it was a gay-oriented movie, to which I was glad to debunk after seeing it. The performances rank genially; the movie may not be completely ripe, but its lack of artificial flavoring and abstinence from most forms of saccharin also seek to preserve. Every once and awhile, it recalls the dysfunctionality of Jane Campion’s Sweetie, but spreading out and applying the title character’s agony and madness across the board to all of the characters. There are no surprises in each bite, lessening the blow of any bathos that come with the territory.

Final Verdict: B-.
