How to Get Ahead in Advertising
[] Buy posters from this movie
by Rob Gonsalves

"Essential for Grant/Robinson fans."
4 stars

Dennis Bagley (Richard E. Grant), a splenetic ad man, is assigned to create a campaign for pimple cream. He obsesses about boils so much that he develops one on his neck ó and it begins to speak.

Bruce Robinsonís satire has broader laughs than his woolly, shaggy, lovable-very-much-despite-itself Withnail & I, which may lead some to decide itís the better comedy. But Advertising covers much of the same ground as the far inferior Crazy People and often feels like Robinsonís attempt to be Paddy Chayefsky. It peters out near the end, losing its edge and becoming flatly didactic.

Still, I laughed a lot, because the always-hilarious Grant takes Robinsonís gargantuan monologues and slams them home. Best line: ďIsnít it amazing how much steam comes off of hot peas?Ē

Grant alone makes this eminently worth renting, and nowhere else will you see Rachel Ward (as Grantís wife) talking into a vacuum-cleaner attachment.
