"Girl Power on the rise, right?"
5 stars

Thelma and Louise is capable of two things: giving men a big hit on the gut (like I felt it, somehow), and giving women a big boost. Probably that's the reason why this film was controversial in many ways. It's basically a standard in the topic of Women's Lib, Girl Power, and other pro-feminist groups. It's like back in the 60's when singer Nancy Sinatra released her Girl Power standard "These boots are made for walking." Now I'm not offending any of this, it was in my opinion a great film on the grounds of girlsploitation, though it's sort of exaggerated in some points. I was even more impressed that a guy like Ridley Scott would take such assignment and pull it off in a great way. The film delivers at the end, mostly because the two female leads are enjoyable, and the film entertains in a unique way that can get mixed opinions on any general audience.

Thelma Dickinson (Geena Davis), and Louise Sawyer (Susan Sarandon) are two bored and sexually oppressed girls, who at least for a day want to forget their beaus, Thelma’s husband Max (Christopher McDonald), and Louise's boyfriend Jimmy (Michael Madsen). On a night in a bar, during their hangout, a local tries to rape Thelma, Louise defends her by shooting him, and all hell breaks loose. They soon are fugitives of the law, and the entire thing turns into a road movie, picking up "cool" guys like JD (Brad Pitt), robbing a store, living the highlife and making a couple of men's lives miserable thanks to their dirty deeds. The law wants them, especially Hal Slocomb (Harvey Keitel), so they can stop their road trip and try to sort things out, but will they ever?

The reverse of the roles will always be discussed on this film. We usually see the males on leading roles, making shit explode, killing the bad guy, fucking and getting the right girl. Well, this time, the tables are turned for the girl side, and now we see the girls going out, doing whatever they want, and kicking the guys asses. The feministic points of view are important though. Women are not going to be the dominated side no more. They are human beings like us and they deserve respect, since they can be as cool and as wicked as ordinary guys can be. Girls can be tough, as this movie shows, and can really surprise you if you’re just a dumbfuck looking for some easy bitch. Basically because of these attitudes, which are thoroughly portrayed in the film, is the reason of why the film kicks the boy's side on the balls, because you're not used to see anything like this. Some tough examples are the “cop” and the “nasty truck driver” scenes, since we get to see the girls be even more cunning than men, and doing things that only men could do. But whoever said that women couldn’t do a man's job? This movie is basically one of the few films that shows us the meaning of Women's Lib, with an In-your-face attitude, though in some parts of the film men are almost treated like trash, so that's one lean objection since the movie should show both sides in a more even way, with of course the women side should have all the highlights, but still, thanks to the films message its worth watching.

Even more the film is boosted to an entertaining road trip thanks to the great performances of both Davis and Sarandon, who were Oscar nominated for their roles. Their performances make the characters believable and very entertaining. The rest of the supporting cast was also good, especially Harvey Keitel and Brad Pitt. Ridley Scott shines in his pre-gladiator glory, showing that he's a reliable director for any type movie besides sci-fi.

In the end, I recommend this film to anyone. Besides recommending women who feel a little down to watch this so they can raise their spirits, men should also see this film because it wasn't made to make men feel bad, but to see that so they can see that a woman can do shit men never thought of before. What can be wrong with that? Besides it's entertaining.
