Mother's Day (1980)

"I guess they ran out of holidays..."
2 stars

Basically your typical not-very-good early '80s horror movie, this is notable only for being perhaps the weirdest credit on the resume of any Tony Award-winning playwright--that is, if co-scribe Warren Leight actually bothers to tell people he wrote this.

In any event, Mother's Day seems to have been a real family affair, unless it's mere coincidence that all these folks named Kaufman, including Troma head Lloyd, pop up in the closing credits. The distinctive Troma brand of leering, heavy-handed "humor" is in fact all over this movie, the nominal plot of which features a trio of female campers being terrorized by an insane TV-obsessed backwoods clan. Echoes of other, and better, horror flicks are numerous--most obviously The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (homicidal inbred family) and Last House on the Left (victims avenging themselves)--and it all concludes with a remarkably ill-considered surprise ending that left me gawking blankly at the screen.

To be fair (for some reason crummy horror flicks bring out my paternal side), Mother's Day, while not remotely a good movie, is at least blandly watchable, and Rose Ross ain't half-bad as the dotty, wild-eyed matriarch.

But if you're in the mood for holiday horror, you're better off with "Halloween."
