"A requirement for any horror fan and a big wet chunk of cool gore"
One of those horror movies that crept onto video and everyone in the neighborhood was talking about it. Truly inspired in its ingenious use of intestines and severed body parts, gore-master Stuart Gordon's first masterpiece has a great sick sense of humor and some really gruesome sequences. The perfect date movie.Yeah, so this spooky young medical student has this glowing goo that reanimates dead tissue so he tries it out on a cat which turns into a freaky homicidal Muppet. He has this nice guy roommate who is dating the dean's daughter. (Always a tough dynamic, even without zombie kitties.) Anyway, people die and are then reanimated, hence the title.
But there's a lot more to it than that. The gore and blood are so far over-the-top that you'll either turn it off after 20 minutes OR it will become an instant horror classic in your heart. The performances by Jeffrey Combs and Bruce Abbott are solid enough, but the standout performance is by David Gale. He has the toughest role, as he carries his own head around in a plate for the last 45 minutes. A special note for the music by Richard Band (brother of producer Charles). Also, Re-Animator holds a distinction of being a movie based on Lovecraft that actually HAS some elements of the writer within the script.
Not for all tastes, but I suppose that's obvious when you're talking about a movie in which a severed head performs oral sex on a screaming woman. If you claim to be a horror movie fan and you're older than say 10, rent this within the next few days. You HAVEN'T seen it in a while, and it has some all-time right nasty shit in it. Trust me on this one.
