"Who dreams of dwarves? Even I don't dream of dwarves."
5 stars

Probably the best and funniest of the mid-’90s crop of movies about making movies.

Steve Buscemi is Nick, an indie-film director struggling to get scenes in the can despite frayed tempers and constant technical snafus. The movie, which rarely leaves the low-budget set, is partly real and partly the characters’ anxiety dreams about what could go wrong.

Obviously a labor of love by writer-director Tom DiCillo and his cast (many of whom helped finance it); hilariously acted by Catherine Keener as leading lady Nicole, Dermot Mulroney as surly DP Wolf, Danielle Von Zerneck as testy AD Wanda, Peter Dinklage as the no-bullshit dwarf Tito, James Le Gros as the egocentric star Chad Palomino (gee, could he be a vicious take-off on Brad Pitt, the star of DiCillo’s Johnny Suede?), and especially Buscemi, who has some of his most hysterically splenetic moments ever.

Definitely a keeper.
