Addicted To Love

"Sorry, no addiction whatsoever"
2 stars

A romantic comedy that shows practically no romance but oh yeah, a stalker-like plot device which makes you wonder if this film would end up being as horrible as the crap that is Endless Love. It isn't, but it ain't that good either.

Mathew Broderick and Meg Ryan are two people that spy on their exes Kelly Preston (Broderick’s) and Tcheky Karyo (Ryan’s). Thanks to an elaborate camera system that Broderick develops (which was actually cool) they both spy on them and see why the hell did these two broke up with them in the first place and contemplate on whether it’s worth trying to make up at all

At first it’s interesting, then it gets predictable and then it gets ultimately boring. Broderick and Ryan have zero chemistry, and it’s obvious that they’re going to fall in love with each other. Same thing befalls the relationship between Preston and Karyo, though with all the humping and screaming, you might have expected a little bit of flesh to be shown, and maybe it would’ve attracted more attention. There are a couple of effective funny gags but then the whole stalker thing is undermined by the predictable love story, and by the film’s end you won’t even care; been there, done that, a whole lot better.

Ryan tries her darnedest to shed her girl-next-door image but every time she tried showing her tough side, I ended up giggling more rather than being intrigued. Broderick is surprisingly pathetic and made me miss more the smart-ass-ness of Ferris Bueller. Preston is hot though, can’t say much for her acting. Karyo as always, gets typecast as “the Frenchman.” Can’t this guy’s talent be better used for other roles that don’t have to be French people for Christ’s sake?

In the end, this romantic comedy ends up being very disappointing. There are better romantic comedies to waste your time on. Director Griffin Dunne, find better scripts to direct or stick to acting. 2-5
