If you can't, you are obviously pop-culture illiterate - or maybe you just haven't seen the movie. Well, you should, dammit. Better yet, rent it on Christmas Eve and give that "Wonderful Life" shit a rest for one year.

Bruce Willis is John McClane, tough New York cop who flies out to L.A. on Christmas Eve to try and reconcile with his estranged hotshot corporate executive wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). He meets up with her at her corporate Christmas party, in the top floor of the Nakatomi building (which is played by the famous Universal building)

While McClane is in the bathroom, the building is taken over by terrorists, led by the slick and thoroughly enjoyable Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman, who fucking rocks!). While Holly and the others are rounded up as hostages, McClane ducks out through a stairwell. Barefoot and wearing a wifebeater that goes from white to several shades of grey throughout the course of the film, he climbs through air vents, sneaks down corridors, talks to himself a lot (with amusing results) and plays hide and seek with the terrorists, upgrading his weapons inventory with each kill like most video game characters - from a 9mm pistol to machine guns and explosives.

Plenty of great shootouts, one-liners, and lots of shit getting blown up. The exchanges between McClane and Hans are most enjoyable. Props to Reginald ValJohnson as Sargeant Al Powell, who becomes McClanes walkie-talkie pal on the ground once the cops finally get off their ass and surround the place. Props also go to Hart Bochner as Ellis, the sleazy executive who you love to hate so much, you'll almost miss him when he's gone. And mad props to Alan Rickman as Hans, who deliciously serves up one of the top five greatest movie villains of all time.

Drive-In Triple Feature Picks for Die Hard:

I could easily recommend the two sequels to Die Hard - neither are as good as the original, but both are fairly entertaining pieces of action fluff. However, if you'd like to break up the monotony of a Bruce Willisathon, try these on for size:

Under Siege, Steven Segal rip-off of the premise that was originally going to be in Die Hard 2 (where John McClane and his wife were to be on a cruise ship taken over by terrorists). Of course, the premise was also ripped off in Speed 2, but Segal's movie, set aboard a hijacked battleship, is much less painful to watch and has the added bonus of Ericka Eleniak's tits. Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones are in full-on hammy villain mode.

Broken Arrow, John Woo's over the top action extravaganza. Travolta is no Rickman here, but he ain't half bad. That Samantha Mathis is sure a cutie!

It's a ridiculously fun ride, with Willis battling incompetent cops and bloodthirsty terrorists while trying not to get upstaged by Rickman, who was so good that I wanted him to get away with it!
