Suspenseful, intelligent, intense political thriller about a president stranded in a small town café during the brink of nuclear war. Deterrence was the first film I was able to give four-stars to this year, and coming from a small distributor (Paramount Classics) directly to the art house theaters, this went largely unseen, and largely unheard of. It’s written and directed by Rod Lurie, who also brought us the taut and intelligent The Contender at the end of this year. I don't fancy much politics in my movies, and even less in real life, but the way that Lurie wove it into the story, and as something comprehendible, he did a pretty good job of straying away from being overly jingoistic. It’s smart, and very intense; I came out of the film feeling like I had been in a pressure cooker.

With Kevin Pollack and Timothy Hutton.

Final Verdict: A.
