This is what Stephen King should always write like...This is one film that would normally be seen as too close to the bone.
I watched this and I felt so uncomfortable through it..
But I think it is a cinematic masterpiece.
Bryan Singer has taken one of the best King novellas and made it more harrowing, if that's possible.
Everyone in this acts well. Especially the two leads, But if I had to tell you why to see this film it would be to watch in awe at Ian McKellan's MASTERFUL performance of someone you loathe and like. How can anyone potray the Ex-Nazi Kurt Dussander, is what I thought before I saw it. I am a long time fan of the book and this film blows the book out of the water.
The plot development in this is very well done, the twist and turns of Brad Renfro's character's psyche is a marvel to watch.
I just cannot speak highly enough of this film.
The direction is very subtle, which is so good for this particular film. It would have been such a mistake to stylize the shots.
The sound is also something that stands out.. especially in the Shower scene.. The sound is haunting to hell.
I recommend this fully.Go see it. That is all I can say.
